Silverback Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 What gauge steel should be used for repairing car body work? Just received a sheet of 16 swg steel for the Escort but it looks a bit on the thick side for replacing the rot I've cut out.....
4parajon Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 I'd use 16swg if I were you, will last much longer than what they make them out of now which is 18swg (1.2mm thick), its only the modern paint techniques and the amount of plastic in the prone area's that stop the rust coming thru on modern cars.

Fishtailparka Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 I find 1mm a bit on the thin side, and 1.5mm too hard to shape. I use 1.2mm for everything except possibly chassis repairs. I don't know what guages they equate to.

4parajon Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 18swg = 1.2mm 16swg = the old 1.6mm but is now in fact 1.5mm 20swg = 1mm
