5hane Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 ok, i want a new computer. But i think im right in saying, building one is much more cost effetive and you get much mre for your money. well, as at the mo ive got a laptop, i cant do much with that. But i was given a deskop aggeess ago from my nan. as you can guess. its, err, how to say it, shit. here's some pic's o yes.. windows ME look at that spec sheet the only thing i think ill keep is the floppy drive, as i hardly use one. ok so, ive been looking around, and i would like to spend about £2-300 (over a period of time) but could maby streatch a bit. im not to bothered about graphic's and sound.. i have a PS3 for gaming, and not a huge fan of music, a pair of headphones is fine for me. but i would like something that would last me about 3 years before it needs updating. before its ancient. ok here's what ive found. mother board : MSI DKA790GX PLATINUM AMD® 790GX Socket AM2+ Motherboard http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+AM2%2B+%28AMD%29/MSI+DKA790GX+PLATINUM+AMD%C2%AE+790GX+Socket+AM2%2B+Motherboard?productId=34621#moreImages hard drive: 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 SATA2 7200RPM 32MB cache (1tb because its not too much more that 500gb and should be enougth ) http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Hard+Drives/Serial+ATA/1TB+Samsung+Spinpoint+F1+SATA2+7200RPM+32MB+cache+?productId=30998 DVD-RW: Samsung 22x DVDRW IDE, Black (not fourtunes, so worth upgrading mine) http:// http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Componen ... ctId=34378 dont even know what this is but figured mine needs updating: Firewire 3 Port PCI Controller http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Controller+Cards/USB+%2F+Firewire/Firewire+3+Port+PCI+Controller?productId=1375 USB's: Belkin USB 2.0 5-Port PCI Card http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Controller+Cards/USB+%2F+Firewire/Belkin+USB+2.0+5-Port+PCI+Card+?productId=32461 [edit- not needed, score ] RAM: 1Gb Samsung Original DDR2 667 (PC2-5300) SDRAM http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR2/DDR2+667+%28PC5300%2F5400%29/1Gb+Samsung+Original+DDR2+667+%28PC2-5300%29+SDRAM+?productId=34678 wirless: Netgear WPN311GE 108 MBPS Rangemax USB wireless adaptor http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1835886467.1233089527@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdcadegfgghdemcflgceggdhhmdfho.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=568199&category_oid=-28363 ok, so i need to know a a few things. 1. will all that go together (is it compatable, i wouldnt know how to check) 2. have i missed anything out ? 3. will i need to upgrade my power supply? what one should i get? 4. what things are most impotant? so i should buy them first. (i presume, motherboard, ram, the KAMA back pannel, network adaptor... i can store stuff on my laptop whilst im using it.) thank you sooo much
Jiffer Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 i used to build my own systems, but technology moves so fast with pcs they very soon out of date, so i found a small independent and had him build me a system to suit. fairs are good places to go, but try to get most of yer bits from the same person and check compatability. i would say you will need a new power supply but they come already fitted to new cases which you will need. dont forget about a cpu and a os
luz008 Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 i sell computers, and to be honest some of the deals dell have on, you can't really get much cheaper when building yourself. the deals with monitors etc are great
Burns Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 looking at that list i can't see a processor...
5hane Posted January 28, 2009 Author Report Posted January 28, 2009 looking at that list i can't see a processor... oops forgot to add that to the list was going to go for: http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/CPUs+%2F+Processors/AMD/Athlon+64+Socket+AM2/AMD+Athlon+64+X2+Dual+Core+6000%2B+3.1GHz+%28AM2%29+?productId=33927 luz, do you think it would be better for me to save and get a whole system then? for the time being, change the RAM and HD in my laptop? (As its bloody slow)
luz008 Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 it really depends mate? you can get loads of package deals, just an example http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/ ... oid=-35410 this would probably need another HDD fitting, but with the 19" display and XP its pretty cheap. because building it yourself you have to think about the Operating System (another £100 for windows OEM), yeah you can get copied versions, but the security checks keep changing so updating the OS becomes a pain., this leads to security risks etc.. you could build one slightly cheaper yourself, and the good thing about doing that is you can make it how you want. but if its not being used for any serious gaming or pro applications then off the shelf are normally fine. cheers Brett
stuartp Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 i built my last two pcs but there's very little reason to mess around these days imho i'd almost certainly just grab a dell they really do offer excellent value for money
Trevmk3 Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 im with some of the other on the Dell bit, i was going to build/update my own one but then saw the way you can pick and choose what stuff you want in your Dell one without the pain of building it and making sure they are compatilble to each other
jimbo Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 Unless you're wanting to do something that requires specialist setup (Music/Video editing, Gaming, Desktop Publishing, etc.) then a Dell deal will sort you out in the main run. Then spend a bit of money on comfy chair/keyboard/mouse and something to backup your data on.......
