i am looking to change the 4 speed box in my escort for a 5 speed but haven't heard great things about the ratios in the standard type9,just wondering if any one has had any experience with burtons type 9 with the 2.98:1 ratio 1st gear rather than the standard 3.65:1 is it worth fitting that rather than the standard box,any advise would be great cheers.

What they all said  , especially the bit about how much time do you actually spend in 1st gear.

what you want to change is 2nd and/or 3rd

4th and 5th is fine.

1st is fine (although i am on a 3.77 standard diff)

1st-30mph

2nd-62mph

3rd-near enough 100mph as damn it

4th-140ish

5th... never topped it out

tthey are the top speeds i'd be expecting to change at on a standard type 9+standard wheel diameter and standard diff.

not great,

but... on a shorter diff i could probably live with it, as said above, its adiquate.... not excelent though, although on the track i'd rather have a shorter ratio where i actually use 5th gear!!!

may aswel be using a 4 speed!

TBH, personally, i hated the short 1st on my old mk1. It's almost redundant as when you pull away, you barely get moving then you have to change.

That was with 13's and a 4.1 diff though.

I will have for sale shortly a BGH type 9 box with a tall 1st gear if anyone is interested? Rated to 240bhp.
