ChristophStone Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 It's all go with this car... got the other lot of problems sorted and now I've noticed the diff is leaking oil onto the driveway. The seller did mention it had the occasional drip of oil on it but overnight it must have dripped quite a lot. Problem is I have to drive from bournemouth to reading tomorrow and back on saturday, and I don't have the tools, know-how, or space to change the seal before I go. How likely is it to be a problem? How hot should the diff get? After an hours varied driving (hehe) today it felt quite warm to the touch but i dont know if that is normal? Can't really put this trip off.... and that was the first time i've seen oil of the driveway. So I'm hoping it's not too bad and if I take it easy all the way it will get me there and back. Is it a big problem? It drives fine but there is a slight whine over 60 mph. Is it likely to make it? Cheers
mk1super Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 If its starting to whine i'd say its on its way out, however i am a mong an no nothing
vibrating_Cake Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 i'd top the oil up before setting off! and top it up before you come back. you dont want a diff locking up on you, itll have to be trailored home! making a gasket from gasket paper is easy enough, and get some sealant around, but deffo dump some oil in so it makes it!
kev16v Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 wot if its a front seal wont be able to make a paper one of those
vibrating_Cake Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 wot if its a front seal wont be able to make a paper one of those ive seen people make amazing things out of paper.... im sure its possible...... possibly only in china though.... them origami crazed children
ChristophStone Posted February 26, 2009 Author Report Posted February 26, 2009 Got no jack, no tools, no know-how, and no time. And no space. Got ntohing really! I think I wil just take it veeery easy on the journey and book it in to get it done when I get home.
ChristophStone Posted February 26, 2009 Author Report Posted February 26, 2009 PS where can I get the gaskets from?
vibrating_Cake Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 PS where can I get the gaskets from? if its the main one around the diff cover you make it yourself out of gasket paper... not sure bwt the other
w p e Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 silicon is the easiest way. but you need to remove the unit to do it properly. and with no tools or jack and axle stands you may need to get it done elseware. it could be the pinion front oil seal in this case the diff needs stripping.
bortaf Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 If there's no oil you wont make it even if you go slow, PUT SOME IN FIRST or don't make the journey sorry but for 10 mins and a ratchet handle (to take the filler plug out) it's not worth blowing the diff is it really You can park it with one wheel on a high curb if you dont have a jack
bigdaz27 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 i woldnt drive it untill it was at least looked at i blew the diff on my escort and had to drive it 5 milles to get it to work so i could use the ramp to fix it and that was a bit intresting
ChristophStone Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 Made it there and back Oil all over the driveway again now tho . Where can I get the appropriate seals/gasket from? I'm not sure whether to just have the oil leak fixed and leave the dif, or to get a new diff also, or just to get a whole new second hand axle unit? Reason being is the diff whines above 50 mph so it might be on it's way out anyway. Any suggestions? Have thought about getting an LSD but don't have the £450 to throw at it
32evo Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 This is the gasket you need, but you need to pull the diff out to do it, half shafts also need to come out. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-ANGLIA-CORTI ... 240%3A1318
sparkycapri Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 if you want to bring it round mine at the weekend i can have a look to see where it it leaking from mate. If it is just the paper gasket pretty easy to fix but if it is the pinion seal it's a lot more complicated
