mr.mk1 Posted July 5, 2009 Author Report Posted July 5, 2009 Just some recent-ish ones. Note the headlight visors aren't on, they flew off while i was doing some ungodly speed, around 110k. I made another set since, and they are back on. No other changes since the front came down a tad. Been having issues with the shifter, it sometimes misses the gate and just flops around...greatly due to a missing nylon Bush im guessing. but its all go again. And the CA18DET for the Escort...
surfingturnip Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I absolutely love both of those, the corty in particular (I've got a mk2 estate myself). Loving the ca18det as well out of interest could you tell me where you got the blinds for the rear side windows please? I might like a set for mine when she's up and running. Cheers
mr.mk1 Posted July 8, 2009 Author Report Posted July 8, 2009 Thanks mate. My venetians are from a Ford Falcon, and consequently dont fit very well, but you cant see that from the outside. They are available quite readily in Australia, but you could well make some with relative ease. Mine are steel. Nice Mk2, nothing like being in 'estate
mr.mk1 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Report Posted August 6, 2009 So just been dicking around with SR20DE Throttle Body swap, shopping around for Z32 AFM, filing off all casting marks, checking my 5 speeds and trying to determine what shifter parts im missing. The weater is warming up which means the shell can come up from my parents place soon, as Ive only a single garage, and my daily has perfect surface rust which I need to manage..therefore cant leave outside in the moisture. Man this shit gets expensive. Ive now got my entire life on Hold, minimal Food, no Fun, no Bitches, cheap Bourbon etc. It needs to be this way because the more I spend on shit, the longer I have to wait until Im doing 5th gear stand-stills. And I cant wait! Cortina Was being a hoe and not charging, been this way for a while. So I found 3 spare Alternators in my back shed, but none were as nice feeling as the one that was in it, So I bit the bullet, and had it overhauled. New Centre bearing, Diodes, brushes, Resistor etc. $153 later and it seems to be churberries. Has anyone reading this ever had their X-Flow shake the alternator bracket bolts out of the block and loosen everything off/broke adjuster stay? This has happened to 3 of my old fords! While hilarious, its a bit uncool. Thank you for reading, Enjoy your evening.
mr.mk1 Posted October 2, 2009 Author Report Posted October 2, 2009 Shameless self promotion Many thanks to Retroclassics, your tops! http://blog.retro-classics.co.nz/?p=2377 http://blog.retro-classics.co.nz/?p=1877
BigDave Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 As soon as I saw that engine choice I knew you would be a kiwi...sweet! I just love Estate cars me, nice job! I wish I had met more oldskool folks when I lived in NZ, I miss the old place! By the way, you know anyone that has a Mk2 with Cosworth Engine fitted at all?? I own the rego MK2COS still in my collection. I was keeping onto it in case I ever make it back with my Mk2, but that may be apipe dream... Cheers Dave...
mr.mk1 Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 Bigdave..your arent the big dave that had the shmick arched twincam (maybe RS1600) mk1 Escort, and Tango (orange mk2 Escort)? Yeah, It was pure accident that I went with the CA18DET idea. I bought a rolling mk1 cortina race car shell off a guy real cheap who had to move up north, and it was filled with CA single and twin cam parts..I didnt know what they were but i like the look of the twincam, Bit of research later and I was hooked! Unfortunately the original purchase provided bugger all useable parts, it planted the seed! There are a few CA Escorts in the build, some very close to completion. I can think of 7.. I dont know of ANY cossie street car Cortina or Escorts, such a shame! Cheers for the kind words.
mr.mk1 Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 Just a teaser of the Escort engine. Im at a bit of a standstill while saving, so i threw it together partially with the new GTRS Garrett Turbo (GT2871R)

Had it on show at Ellerslie in Auckland one year, got heaps of attention in NZ. Sadly had to sell Tango, but I still have the sweet Turbo YB Mk2! Sweet looking engine there by the way. A mate of mine right up in bushman land of Northland has been building a Mk2 with S2000 engine in it. A bit further south in Whangarei my mate Pete is building a proper ex-woks Walmart RS1600 he found in a field! He also does tarmac events in his RS18. You may have seen him? There is a fella in Auckland that messes with CA lumps and Escorts, another Pete. He builds some real nice engines. You may of also heard of Herberts in Auckland? Check out their website for some fantastic fabrication and race prep work. They built many of the one off parts for my current Mk2. I know of only one Mk2 YB in NZ just now, but its been work in progress for many years. Its actually in a Mk2 Van. The fella lives on the West cpast in Dargaville. Memeber of the NZ Van Club. Mad as a badger he is! I also used to own the plate MKIBDA, but that got snapped up on TradeMe real quick. I miss NZ me!! Cheers...
mr.mk1 Posted November 3, 2009 Author Report Posted November 3, 2009 29-10-09 I was getting sad with the car, seeing just how much I have to go, the $00000's i dont have that need spent, and wanting it finished about 12 months ago. But I bought a nice new green grinder yesterday and made up patches for the old fuel tank line holes, un-nessisary drain holes in the floor and the like. And magic'd up a set of these strengthening gussets: So more of the same to commence, then I will borrow my brothers MIG and my Oxy plant back for a day and weld in/fill remaining holes. Then its back to fook knows what. I need to find a diff and shorten it, But i need to decide on wheels and offsets to do that, Mini-tub the rear, Then 6 link and turrett, Finish seam welding in engine compartment, Drill and plug around window and door openings (in the absence of a seam welder, grrr) Then figure out what front suspension legs and x-member to use, Make that fit, Mount engine and box, Cut tunnel and wham the S12 manual tunnel in, Hang self/get a loan? fook I hate loving dicked-with old cars. 30-10-09 Lame update time: I bought a new corded 500w drill and a new bench Vice, it has a swivel base..which id rather not have for strength reasons, but it could be handy. So last nite, I Drilled the rivets and removed the factory brake line clip holders, and bonnet stay holder, Wire wheeled any surface rust thats popped up since last year, (jesus, it was a year ago i seam welded it!?!) Wire wheeled Engine-bay seams, and behind where the gussets will go, Removed factory seam sealer where applicable, Tapped up any bent bits I saw, Cut out the rusted lips under the heater bubble and made patches. 2-11-09 Had a bit more progress on saturday afternoon. Wire wheeled the seam-welds I put on, Etch primed them. Also Ground the penetration off on the inside floor and Wire wheeled, and again, Etched. Dosent sound like much, but was a good 4 hour stint.
mr.mk1 Posted November 6, 2009 Author Report Posted November 6, 2009 Cheers mate, Your pair are slick to bits!
mr.mk1 Posted November 8, 2009 Author Report Posted November 8, 2009 Just some pictures of the work undertaken since the last photo-less updates. And while the camera was actually working,
Joe Little Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 Hey mate, love the cortina! look awesome, rat look is so cool! Nice escort to, looks like a really good project!! Joe
mr.mk1 Posted November 26, 2009 Author Report Posted November 26, 2009 Thanks mate, rat is were its at! I just bought some Fibreglass front guards for the Escort. Stoked!
30psi MK2 CORTINA Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 hey mate. You got some really nice work going on there Engine is looking sweet and all you body work looks A-class. Ill be keeping an eye in here tp watch the progress so keep the pics rolling. What sort of diff you gonna run in it? Modified falcon like mine or something different?
mr.mk1 Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 Thanks mate, coming from you thats well appreciated! Im probably going to run a Hilux LSD, Falcon diffs still command big money over here, and would be heavy as shit! Im weighing up my options at the moment, So then I can decide on wheel offsets and sizes, brakes, tubs, 6 link, coilover bags etc. I need $$$$!
mr.mk1 Posted December 8, 2009 Author Report Posted December 8, 2009 I Pulled apart my Escort diff from under the Mk1, and pulled an axle from the Cortina last nite, pslines are the same and the ratios much better in the Escort, so when I get half a chance, ill swap diff heads and see if I can get some speed and reliability out of the thing. Also out my Bikkies on for a change, looks hard as!
mr.mk1 Posted January 20, 2010 Author Report Posted January 20, 2010 Went to Clyde for a swank-session. Great little town for soft photoshoots. Shame my camera sucks though. Just getting all the pictures i want before its sold, $6000 NZD drive away.
