livewire7116 Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 The rules regarding more modern engines in old cars can be a grey area, officially if the engine is from a 1995 car then the emissions must pass at that level no matter if the car is older, ive always been lucky as i have been in trade 20 yrs and have a very good contact list for mot testers and they just mot it as a 1977 car, however you have to realise if the mot man doesnt know you then you are asking him to put his mot license at risk for a stranger, the age old saying of "NOT WHAT YOU KNOW ITS WHO YOU KNOW" comes into play

As has been said numerous times previously, the vehicle is emmisions tested according to whichever is older, engine or car. eg. 2008 Duratec engine fitted in a 1970 mk1 Escort, tested as a 1970 vehicle, so Visible smoke check only. 1956 sidevalve fitted in a 2008 Focus, tested as a 1956 vehicle (with regards to emmisions), so again, Visible smoke check only. (But you have to prove the engine is from 1956 )

However most of our Mk2 transits have later engines, nothing is ever said and they are MOT'd to the registration, in other words the Mk1s get a visual test, and the Mk2s get emissions to the year the van was manufactured. I know of a Mk1 1969 transit with a 2004 duratorq fitted, it only ever has a visual smoke test, despite the engine quite obviously not being 1969, and only coming out in 2003!

Allso he should not have refused to test without isuing the relavent paperwork . Just because the engine has been changed does not mean the car is unsafe. I have just tested a mk1 fiesta with a turbod 1700 puma engine in The car was a dog but I have to test what is presented.
