Retro-gone. Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 what do we think? i have no idea on value of modern cars but this is just what we need, and its local http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 2759.l1259
Yeomans22 Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 these are good motors. when looking at cars at this sort of money, aslong as there mot and it runs ok, you can't really go wrong, if they were crap then you wouldn't see many about but u see loads of mk5 escorts so they must be ok. just make sure u take it for a long test drive and leaving it runing when you get back for aslong as possible to check 4 overheter or head gasket problems.
emu Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 They arent bad cars at all. The later ones like that are much better than the early 90's ones. Check ALL the electrics though because they do sometimes suffer with fusebox problems Also, check the cambelt has been changed along with the guide and tensioner pulleys. The pulleys are plastic and break up Sometimes people just sling a belt on to do it cheap. Replacement interval is about 60k I seem to remember. If it does need changing then its a pretty easy one to do DIY
Retro-gone. Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 went to see it today and had a drive, only probs i can see is i think the clutch is on its way as its not biting till pedals 2inch near the top, drivers door wont open on key , have to open central locking via passenger side then walk round to get in drivers side , other than that not bad, im confident he'l take £375 for it if it doesnt sell on ebay, whatdya reckon? shall i go for it?
mk1mexico Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 I think it will be ideal for what you want it for Tony, at the end of the day whatever breaks on it will be cheap to fix anyway as there is 100's of them in scrap yards. Central locking will most probably be a sticky solenoid, and even a clutch isnt a massive job, if you can do the engine/box in your capri a clutch isnt so bad on one of these.
Savvi Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 Suits you Sir GO for it all the bits are cheap, you handy with your hands ,easy to repair common probs as said: Cambelt & pulleys Door & ignition locks ,.........keys wear spray of Wd40 might cure that. Fusebox........................ plug & play Apart from that the rest is good. I have an estate as a runaround, as you can carry most things in them
Retro-gone. Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 cool, cheers chaps, next question, wheres cheapest place to insure somethin like this?
antz Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 prob best to try confused.com or compare the market or something
caprinerd Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 tony is thata rust staing coming down from the rear wiper if it is you might want to look abit deeper mate but there again if you get it for anything under £400 your onto a winner mate
emu Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 If the door locks with the key then its probably the lock or key that is worn. If you wanted a cheap fix then you could swap the lock barrels from side to side, or a new key might sort it
evil knievel Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 cheapest fix is to swap the locks over really, tibbe's are a fook to work on!
andy a Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 Check the back end of the sills inside, I've seen them rusty right up to the end of production, also stick your hand up under the dash on the passenger side and give the battery tray a good tap, they can hold water there and rot out quick (did a V reg van not so long ago that had rotted across 40% of the bulkhead there ) The lock is a £13 kit from any Ford dealer and you make it up to your key if thats the problem, if its just not that door opening on the locking then its a solonoid, might clean up or a couple of quid from a scrappies...
Mr Sam Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 prob best to try confused.com or compare the market or something you mean compare the MEERKAT dot com watch out for them going sideways on rounderbouts
