stevepeanut Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 if you were to over fill the engine with oil. What would happen? I think I might have overfilled mine, and when ever I give it a good boot on the accelerator, there are massive clouds of white smoke coming out of the back. Does that sound about right?
Seals2 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 sometimes this happens when over filling but it worse case it can blow seals.
Conor Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 The worst that can happen is the pistons smacking into the oil bends the conrods and/or the crankshaft. If you've massively overfilled it (as in up to the top of the dipstick and yes I have seen people do this) it can hydraulic the engine, locking it up solid.
stevepeanut Posted May 30, 2009 Author Report Posted May 30, 2009 dip stick was showing nothing, put a litre in and it was just starting to show on the end, dumped in another half litre and it was showing on the minimum so a 1.5 litres in, but not sure how much its over filled by I'm pretty sure now the dipstick I have, is maybe off another car and its too short,
Takeshi Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 If there was nothing on the dipstick and you put 1 1/2 litres to get it upto the miminum mark, then as you say have the wrong dipstick or your driving your engine to death with no oil...
stevepeanut Posted May 30, 2009 Author Report Posted May 30, 2009 I've had lots of probs with my dipstick, it wont ever go back in, I have the lift the whole outer tube off and put the whole thing back in one go. Got a replacement dipstick from escort tec not long ago, and now I looked at that and its totally different to the one on my car. The wire is a lot longer. So thinking the one in my car must be too short. Fingers crossed nothing has been damaged. Car still drives ok apart from the smoke
bomber1 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 done the same when i had my mk2 escort. it burnt / smoked off what it didnt want then all was good. bar being follwed to work the first morning after i put to much oil in
2.8i Cossie Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 done the same thing a while back so i drained it out again and refilled!
emu Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 drain all the oil out, refill with the correct measured amount, then make your own mark on the dipstick
Admin Vista Posted May 31, 2009 Admin Report Posted May 31, 2009 drain all the oil out, refill with the correct measured amount, then make your own mark on the dipstick Spot on
