Mark2Mark Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 I am picking up my gearbox this week, it is a 4 speed from an early 2.8i capri and will be fitting it to an 1800 ZETEC going in a mk2 escort, i know i have to get the input shaft machined but not sure how much by does anyone know? I am not picking up the engine untill the new year so was hoping to get it done before i get the engine. Thanks Mark
Tom Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 i think its an inch mate but you have to machine both the spigot and the toothed part of the shaft
johnboy Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 I know mine was a 5 speed but I found the short type input shaft swapped straight over http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/vi ... highlight=
Tom Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 its a complete strip down to do that tho isn't it?

johnboy Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 its a complete strip down to do that tho isn't it? Yeah!
Mark2Mark Posted December 18, 2006 Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 Surley you would have to strip the box anyway to get the original one machined?
johnboy Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 I know mine was a 5 speed but I found the short type input shaft swapped straight over http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/vi ... highlight= Just the job mate I will just have to get a 2.0 input and have a go and hope the 4&5 speed are the same. got to be cheaper than machining A lot cheaper! If there not the same its not the end of the world! Its also a good excuse to open the box and check everything is in good condition. Keep us updated!
Mark2Mark Posted December 18, 2006 Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 Will do mate, thanks for that. Now then who has got a knackered 2.0 box i can buy?
Onyx Dave Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 I have never had the input shaft machined, all I have ever done is cut it down and finished it of with a grinder, done this also with all the boxes used in our race cars, never had a problem. Also saves on stripping down the box to get the input shaft out.
quickrack Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Yep. Slice a wee bit off it with the grinder. But go slow to keep the heat levels down.
johnboy Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Just noticed there is a tech article on the type e gearbox in claddic ford this month.
Mark2Mark Posted December 19, 2006 Author Report Posted December 19, 2006 Yeah i have seen that, a little unsure now what this box is out of, i was told early 2.8i but it does not list the 2.8 capri as having this box? oh well i pick it up on thursday so i will be able to identify it then. Also i have been offered a V.Cheap 3.0 mk1 capri box would this be any use to me? (i really should have put this thread in the engine and transmissions bit)
johnboy Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Not sure about the 3litre box, I seem think they wont fit the 4 pot engines. Might be worth asking in the capri section.
QuadCamCapri Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 If it's a 4-speed from an early 2.8 it will be the 'Type 5' also used on the 3.0 Essex with a different bellhousing and input shaft. I think your biggest problem will be mounting it on a 4-pot as it was only ever used on V6's so I don't think there is a bellhousing available. If the other one is from an early Mk1 it will be the one with external rods and awful ratios !
Mark2Mark Posted December 19, 2006 Author Report Posted December 19, 2006 Well back on ebay with it then Thinking about it though people use the 5 speed 2.8i box so there must be a bellhousing to bolt that to a 4cyl engine? OMG i am sooooo confised
johnboy Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Well, assuming the 4speed 2.8 box doesnt have an integral bellhousing the 2l bell housing (or alloy RS2k) might be suitable (I used the 2litre bellhousing on my 5sp swap) Having said that, I honestly dont know for sure.
Onyx Dave Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 You can use the RS2 bellhousing on 2.8 4 and 5 speed boxes but a 3 litre box is different and not worth using. If you got a Xflow its better to use a cast Sierra bellhousing and a Pinto use a RS2 bellhousing, but you also need a clutch cable plate if your not using the RS2 sump.
QuadCamCapri Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 The RS2 bellhousing can be used on the 2.8 5-speed (Type 9) as it's from the same family as the RS2 4-speed (Type E). The 2.8 4-speed cannot be used as it's the same as the 3.0 4-speed (except for the input shaft and bellhousing) ie a 'Type 5' and the only bellhousings available are for the 2.8 or 3.0 V6's.
