bomber1 Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 40 odd years or rust build up in my engine block can anyone suggest any acid/rust killer that will do the job?
Conor Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Strip it to a bare block, remove core plugs, acid bath it.
LEONMEX Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 had my old block acid dipped & was as good as new after & ready for paint. Any old machine shop should be able to help
bomber1 Posted June 23, 2009 Author Report Posted June 23, 2009 any thing i can use with out striping to a bare block havent got the knolage or enough paitance withthe car for that
BIGKEV Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 In a word Jason - No mate - ask clive he'll tell you the same - take it to be proffesionally cleaned mate - you will not regret it
bomber1 Posted June 26, 2009 Author Report Posted June 26, 2009 think i have some thing will let u know how i get on
emu Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 Ive used dishwasher tablets for cleaning out oil/coolant/mayo from Rover K-series before now. Bunged them in the hoses, filled it with water and let it run for a while. Seems to do a pretty good job of breaking down the crap Dont know that it would cope that well with rust though You having overheating problems again?
bomber1 Posted June 26, 2009 Author Report Posted June 26, 2009 tried all that not a chance. yes shes still not a well pup head is off again for the 3rd time clive has looked at it and no one can work out why its cooking. its blown between 2and3 but there must be a reason its getting so hot and doing the gaskets. head and block are straight its got new heater matrix high performance rad stock fan and 14in elecy fan only 2 things can be causing it imo the block is fured up or i didnt clean the block/head mating surfices well enough last time it was apart so im not taking any chances this time
emu Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 bugger It isnt cracked anywhere is is? or the head gone porous? Hope you manage to get it sorted so you can get out and enjoy her with confidence
bomber1 Posted June 26, 2009 Author Report Posted June 26, 2009 how do u tell if the head is porous? its all cast iron. hope to be going to the west country in two weeks so i do hope its sorted this time. i dont think its cracked as its not presrising the system
emu Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 your local cylinder head engineering place should be able to do a pressure test on it to check for cracks/porosity. Down here, I would use Cylinder Head Engineering in Fareham, but Clive will probably know someone a bit closer to you both Just thinking to try and eliminate all the possible causes for you Is it using any water or just getting hot?
bomber1 Posted June 26, 2009 Author Report Posted June 26, 2009 just getting hot tbh its got the right 13lb cap on it well antifreeze ie neat. all the time its moving 50mph and above its fine come under that things start getting hot pretty quick tho its got worse very quick since classic ford.
emu Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 Does your waterpump look ok? Is it easy enough to whip out and check? Maybe the impellor is slipping and not pumping enough at low revs? Had some audi pumps fail where the impellor is loose on the shaft. Although in fairness the ones ive dealt with are the opposite way round, they sit and idle all day but overheat when you drive them.
emu Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 While I think about what could be causing your overheating, I wonder if a little mix of coke and vinegar would clean things out nicely
GJUK Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 I've just been cleaning my engine this week. I used a really powerful jet wash (water) to clean all the crap off of it, then lots of turps and elbow power for the rest of it. Took about 2 days to do.
bomber1 Posted June 27, 2009 Author Report Posted June 27, 2009 I've just been cleaning my engine this week. I used a really powerful jet wash (water) to clean all the crap off of it, then lots of turps and elbow power for the rest of it. Took about 2 days to do. yeah but i bet u couldnt clean the internal water ways like that just going to see if i have an engine block left after i put that neat acid wash in it emu i did try the coke thing but didnt work maybee it was misssing the vingar
emu Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 emu i did try the coke thing but didnt work maybe it was missing the vingar I just thought about the old penny experiment at skool and wondered if it works on engines Good to see im not the only one with such a strange chain of thought
bomber1 Posted June 27, 2009 Author Report Posted June 27, 2009 right to let u guys know i went tothe local industrial cleanint warehouseand brought 10 litres of altrans by deb which is the same people that do swarfega. inital test show this stuff to work wonders on cleaning out the water ways of my engine of rust. i put two stat housings into a bucket of this gear 24hrs later there clean of rust and most of the paint has come off. so will leave this gear in the block and head till monday eve then drain and wash through
Durham Fiesta Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 your symptoms sounds exactly what i had on the fiesta a few months back , turned out to be an air lock. I was flushing the system through by taking the bottom rad hoses off and it was still the same , but then i was told to take the hose that goes to the carb off and flush it through again and after that everything was fine
bortaf Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 What pump are you running? OE or aftermarket? i ask cos the impellars on most aftermarket ones are open at the ends unlike OE spec ones and they dont curculate as well IMHO Have you had the block crack tested, not a usuall thing but i've had a few crack, no where near as many as cracked heads but it does happen, hopefully the cleanout will sort it out (fingers crossed)
bomber1 Posted June 28, 2009 Author Report Posted June 28, 2009 neither head or block have been crack tested. but if this round of work dont cure it i will have to find the cash for the spare lump to have the full montey done to it. tbh its not presureing the system like i would have thought it would do with a crack in the head or block?
