sambo Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 sorry for this subject but i have been offered a clio 172 sport. Quite cheap but the cam belt went and took all 16 valves with it. I am thinking of a little money making excersise and replacing the valves myself. does anyone know much about these cars? apparently they are very good little hot hatches and sell for quite good money still. I think they use variable valve timing so i am wondering if the job will be particularly difficult?? Cheers.
vibrating_Cake Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 same as any other headwork really, valves/cams etc are the same, the variable bit comes with oil pressure iirc, which opens a valve which advances the cams. u rev higher you get higher oil pressure so more oil pressure=more advanced cams not sure the exact way it works, may be an idea to get on a clio forum and ask how to time it back up again after re-valving. brill handling little cars and they do go very well for what they are. cheap trackday car time methinks. p.s. to re-sell, strip engine down, take pics of the rebuild, and sell on ebay, you'll make loads! then strip the suspension wheels tyres bumpers etc, boy racers looooove making their 1.1's into 172 replicas and pay good money for parts if not, yes they still get good money tbh!
FredTransit Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 I know something about clios. I know I don't like em and won't be having one....
sambo Posted July 9, 2009 Author Report Posted July 9, 2009 I know something about clios. I know I don't like em and won't be having one.... i had one and it was so bad, it was good!
JP. Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 It all depends if its only the valves that are damadged. Have seen engine's with damadged conrods & or pistons too. They thought that changing head was enough but within a few miles...whats that noise.......................bugger It all depends on the speed and revs when it happen'd. So don't be surpriced if ther's more damadge than you'll expect. The two engines I worked on never run that good as they did before.
Mr Sam Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 I know something about clios. I know I don't like em and won't be having one.... i whole heartedly agree!
mk1mexico Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Crackin g little cars when up and running, i had a 172 Cup for 18 months, loved every minute of it, only thing went wrong was the stitching on the steering wheel came loose, Renault gave me a brand new one under warranty. Must be able to get a complete head from a breakers for a couple of hundred notes?
FredTransit Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Must be able to get a complete head from a breakers for a couple of hundred notes? How much? I can get a whole pinto for that....
bigdaz27 Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 this would be worth keeping an eye on if its only the valves http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Renault-Clio-Spor ... 7C294%3A50
mk1mexico Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Must be able to get a complete head from a breakers for a couple of hundred notes? How much? I can get a whole pinto for that.... My point was it could be cheaper than shelling out for 16 valves etc
sambo Posted July 10, 2009 Author Report Posted July 10, 2009 Thanks alot guys, i was hoping that the these engines didnt tend to knacker other components when the belt lets go so i will need to investigate. They have very good reviews and i will just have to see how much i can get the car for initially. the guy has been offered a complete engine (unknown mileage) for £600 delivered..... if i can get the car for around that it may be worth considering. The car has only done 50K miles too.
