RATMK1.jpg

Ive seen this car before its a proper rat, dings and rust holes everywhere except the right places (chassis, under the bonnet etc)

When brought to the UK the police threatened to scrap it but it was all legal according to Irish law where we dont MOT cars over 30 years old. I dont think it's welcome in the UK again. Cant find the original story (phpbb not allowing searches under 3 letters, "mk1 rat golf")

Wish i could find a better pc

There's a difference between Rat look and Patina look. Rat look is mostly satin black or primer coated

while Patina...speaks for it self.....

Me personal likes Patina

How do you get the paint so rusty like the top VW???

Is something applied to it to corrode it intentionally?

They just paint strip it then leave it out in the rain :?

So thats actually how they do it - i realise thats the obvious solution, but I thought they might be a bit more creative....

when people do pannels, they sometimes tbare metal it, and put it in a padling pool, full of water and salt, leave it a few days and it will come out covered.

sometimes they look good, things like that golf above, as said, are trying to hard. IMO.

rat is awesome but just like every style, some people get it really wrong.

as for the mirror, i had to weld an extra piece on my brakcet to make it wider, might be worth trying that

LOVE IT!

Always have, always will. My Current daily driver Estate is rolling as i found it, Just Low on wide wheels, and the minimalist amount of repair to get it road legal.

People say its lazy..Matt black is Lazy.

Its just as hard to keep a rat authentic as it is to keep a showcar mint.

Heres some nice links with nostalgic cars included:

the vw boys do this so well,im not overly keen on matt paint but i love the cars which have plenty of patina.does anyone remember that mk1 cortina that was in classic ford a year or so ago, that was probably the best example of a rat osf i have seen,i'l try and find some pics of it.

I can understand if you dont have funds to get your car resprayed ,or buy an OSF and just want to run round in it but to create the look , i just dont get it.I would prefer fairly shiney any day .
