some blue smoke from oil filler cap

Hi

I have just bought a 1600 sport which had the engine rebuilt 1000 miles ago and i have noticed that a little blue smoke comes out of the oil filler cap and also the filter on the oil catch tank.

 

A couple of people have told me this is normal and not to woory about it and that its probably not fully bedded in yetbut then i read on the internet that the engine is knackered can anyone shed some more light on this.

 

Also i was going to cheque the cylinder compression can someone tell me what it should be roughly.

 

Haven't had or worked on an OSF for about 20 years so am learning as i go

Doesn't sound like it's 'knackered' but it sounds like it's breathing a bit. Is the engine modified? Has it been rebuilt by a reputable firm, or by the previous owner?

 

Not sure about the compression except I know they should all be roughly the same

 

 

Perhaps a post in the Crossflow and Pinto room or the W.P.E room may provide a more knowledgable answer

hi, i only have the previous owners word on this but judging by the standard of the rest of the work I don't doubt some work has been done to the engine. It supposidly has been bored to a 1680cc with different cam and twin 40's

id say either breather or piston rings with the oil cap but probably breather

I doubt a bit of smoke is too much to worry about. I've had smokey crossflows that go on forever

if it runs ok ignore it and check oil regurely

My 1600 crossflow breathes heavy amd smokes a bit as well, in fact all of the crossflow escies I've had did. Ive never worried too much unless they started banging and rattling as well. They are pretty bullitproof motors even when theyve been played with so I wouldn't worry too much.

 

On another note if its the car in your sig I nearly started selling body parts when it came on ebay, proper lush!

Yes it is the one in my sig. Only got it last week.

A mechanic friend said not to worry about it but then i started reading horror stories on the web.

had a look round it before when i bought some parts off him, he knows his stuff on osf's

 

i wouldn't worry about it, the car he built is a cracker and he wouldn't have done a bad job on the engine either.

the car is ace, just not sure of the engine spec and seeing as its only done 1000 miles wanted to make sure i wasn't doing it any damage.
