jimbo Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 I have some rumbles coming from my existing gearbox which makes me think that a change is due..... I have a spare type 9 ready to drop in, but I don't know how well it runs. I'm wondering if there's some bits I should replace as a precaution before fitting the gearbox. I gather that a full type 9 rebuild is quite an involved process (I haven't seen a manual), so that might not be worth doing unless I have to. What are your thoughts? Does anyone have a PDF of a manual they could share with me?

Does anyone have a PDF of a manual they could share with me? You can buy a type 9 which is 'good' for about £50+. The question is, do you have the skill and time to rebuild one? Offset that against the £50 it might cost you to buy a decent one, that you can just drop in... Jon
jimbo Posted November 14, 2009 Author Report Posted November 14, 2009 I've perhaps undersold the "new" box. I was told the new one is good and I have no reason to disbelieve the seller. I guess I'm just thinking about work limitation. Time is a bit short with all my other jobs on the "to-do" list....In terms of skill, I'm patient, methodical and always willing to learn. So with that, and of course, the excellent help of fellow OSF-ers, it's not something I'd be afraid to have a go at.... I suppose a better option would be to fit the new box and then I have time to re-build the other one as and when time allows. In that case, I guess I'm just checking for leaky seals/gaskets and maybe a change of oil, before fitting the new box.
livewire7116 Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 Think something you need to consider is that the majority of type9s come from the good old s ierra donor car, now most of these have done well in excess of 100k and driven by middle age family people with a sedate 115bhp for the inj models, now most of us have modified engines and even a half tidy pinto will put out about 150 ish at flywheel and we drive like twats and like to snatch gears and abuse it beyond what it was ever designed for so consider this when you buy a "NEW SECOND HAND BOX" personally i would go for e unit from Burton Power at least you get a warranty
LEONMEX Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 i vote for a £50 box & take a chance,i only broke 1 type 9 in the 6 years of having them on the back of a hot pinto. My last type 9 came from a capri i raced at foxhall & won a dd with so guessed it would'nt have much more abuse than that never had a problem with them though
bomber1 Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 if its the one i sold u jim then it is good i wouldnt of said if it wasnt. i had that in my mk1 its just i went for one with diffrent ratios and need cash/space. just a fresh bellhousing and tailshaft seal will see you fine
