mk1rob Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 Hi! Just got my type 9 gearbox back from being rebuilt, but im having problems getting it back in. The cars only jacked up just over a foot so its a bit awkward. Ive got the gearbox up to the right level supported on a jack and some blocks of wood at the mo and the shaft in the bell housing has just made it into the clutch hole. The bellhousing is about an inch off the engine but i cant budge it any further. Has anyone got any tips on how i can get it butted up to the engine? Its a mk1 escort with pinto if that makes any difference? Thanks
Jiffer Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 never done it that way, years ago we used to hot hod mk1 and mk2s with pintos and we only ever fitted them engine and gear box in one, dont know if this is the norm but only know what I did in the past.
escortmatt Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 it is tight but i backs up the front of the engine so its tilted right back then a fair bit of wiggling and she go
over_head_cam Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 I know it's a silly question and I don't mean it in a rude way, but have you lined the clutch up properly?
livewire7116 Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 Have you tried turning the front crank pulley or the rear end of the output shaft? sometimes a short break and cup of tea helps
emu Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 I think i'd agree with OHCs suggestion and check the clutch plate alignment Sounds like the input shaft is engaging with the clutch plate , but isnt lined up quite right to fit into the crank.
Ste-V Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 I know it's a silly question and I don't mean it in a rude way, but have you lined the clutch up properly? Yeah, that'd be the first place I would start, is it lined up properly? Or like livewire said, It wont slot straight in, try turning crank pulley and/or rotating box while you try to slide it in? (Will probs have to remove trolley jack)
GT_lenny Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 ^^^what they said, take the box out the way anst make sure the clutch plates not moved as you took the 'box out, once your happy its lined up have another go and if its the same try putting it in gear and turning the output shaft as you push it in,
mk1rob Posted November 15, 2009 Author Report Posted November 15, 2009 Thanks for all the help people! much appreciated! Ill give it ago
rudel Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Had the same problem albiet with a crossflow, easiest way is lower the engine while still on the crossmember ie lower the crossmember with the engine still attached (easy really just get longer crossmember bolts) then you get a few more inches to "jiggle" shit if you follow lol Hope you get it in whatever route you take, where are you located if you can get the car to me i have a workshop pit and will help you out (much easier when you are under the car with 2 of you sliding it in) regards

atomic punk Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Ive had similar trouble with my Xflow to type 9, check you've got the right release bearing - mine was wrong and was jamming against the clutch plate which made it impossible to mate the gearbox up
