Mr Sam Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 im itchig to get on with the fez but not in this cold work has a nice portable diesel space heater so i checked prices but dont want to spead that much are the propane ones much good? its only a single garage 2 layres of plasterboard on th ceiling too been told i can have the car in it im so motivated at the moment but i cant feel my fingers
nitrousnutter Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 hello mate the propane ones are nice instant heat but they cause dampness and condensation plus they are more expensive to run as the gas is expensive, also dont buy an old diesel one as they are more often than not fecked, if your gonna buy a diesel one go new, expensive but worth it.
retrorigg Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 i used to have a diesel one but it seriosly drank diesel, im now usin a heat demon (meduim size )gas one n it works a treat n not to bad on gas, use about 2/3 bottles of 19kilo bottle over the whole winter but thats running it a good 4 hrs a day
Fishtailparka Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 Don't get one of the propane space heaters. Way too big for a garage. Or if you are determined to have one of them, I will sell you mine because it is just too bloody hot, and uses a big bottle of propane in a nanosecond. Those glowy things are better, wish I had just stuck with that.
Mr Sam Posted January 6, 2010 Author Report Posted January 6, 2010 clowy things as in an old gas fire? all i really want todo is take the chill off the place so i can feel my fingers im sat in my bedroom (abover the garage) which is seperated from the house no central heating just a little log burner which i havent lit tonight just want a economical way off stayig half warm to get on with things and at lest heat will escape to my room
GT_lenny Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 for a small single garage one of those old calor gas heaters (glowy things) would work a treat, if your set on a space heater though- diesel is the way forward and yes they do run on red diesel
over_head_cam Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 As has been said though, be aware that heaters that burn stuff produce water (as well as some carbon monoxide) so make sure you're well ventilated
Ken B Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 I just bought 2 of those 3 bar halgoen heaters for £12 each (local Factory Shop) takes about an hour for it to warm an 18x18 garage to a sensible temp, but you dont get all that condensation all over your tools and other things etc like you do with a propane heater which i also have but no longer use after last year. Took ages for the dampness to clear.
bortaf Posted January 6, 2010 Report Posted January 6, 2010 Anything electric is expensive, got a halogen heater in me workshop and when it's on just watch the meter spin like a fooker also have a propane space heater right small only about 18 inches long and that will do a 19Kg bottle of propane in about 20 hours total that's £22 to refill but still way cheaper tahn any electric fire we've tried. All i would say is insulation!!!! turn on warm up turn off then it's all down to the insulation to keep the ehat in for as long as possable, mine's just roofing sheet and the heats gone again in 20 mins Carpet on the walls and some hardbourd under the rafters stuffed with crumpled newspaper doe the trick but ob propper loft insulation or styrofoam is better
Mr Sam Posted January 6, 2010 Author Report Posted January 6, 2010 the garage has an upstairs (my bedroom) and to meet fire regs the gare has 2 layers of plasterboard so it should hang onto the heat okay might just get one of them glowy gas fires
