stevepeanut Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 just bought a wireless router, me and mrspeanut both have laptops, both laptops have the same message - connection speed very good speed 54.0 mbps mine works fine, every page downloads and opens in a fraction of a second, but mrs laptop is going really slow when we click a link or open a page, the bar on the bottom right opens up and the green blocks slowly fill up, and it can take up to a minute to open a page. I dont understand why hers is slow like that and mine is fine. Anyone got any idea why one is really fast and one is really slow? Also her laptop is only a few weeks old, so is running fast and has no other problems
Copey Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 does the router have different channels it can run on? if so change to one of them and see if its any better, sometimes helps
Savvi Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Could be the amount of Ram, processor speed, different wireless adaptors, type of virus software for starters
RS2kSX Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 we got a second laptop before christmas, only connects via wirless if you stand next to the router, talked to the shop and been told the wirless adaptors f**ked, take it back for an exchange...
stevepeanut Posted January 10, 2010 Author Report Posted January 10, 2010 Could be the amount of Ram, processor speed, different wireless adaptors, type of virus software for starters its running 1.6Ghz processor and 1GB of ram, everything else on her pc is fine, in fact its very fast, opens up windows and programs as fast as anything I have used. Its just the loading up of webpages thats slow. Running avira antivirus
Savvi Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 You can do a connection speed test, just google, mines crap at present around 6 mps i'm seriously looking at moving away from Bt as it was much faster at my old house on Virgin cable.

omj624p Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 what I don't understand is why in the corner of the tool bar is says 54.0 mbps Thats the speed that your wifi card can talk to the router. It has NOTHING to do with the broadband AT ALL. If you were transferring files from one PC to the other, then that's when the faster wifi connections really help. Have you got Symantec Anti Virus on the slow PC? I have found that to seriously slow PC's down. Try removing it. Steve

Steve Its running avira, I am thinking of doing a system restore on it, its only a few weeks old, so that'll take it back to the start how we got it, and we'll see how it runs from there
