can someone sort out a computer for me?

i use a laptop for the site which is fine but my daughter uses a

home type one, her comp is very slow (dont know the power details)

+ is a few years old. can anyone local to me take the box away +

boost it up it has the old windows on it now but would like vista +

coz she needs it for homework things like powerpoint/word/ student

type stuff really, i can deliver it if thats a problem i have asked about

this with someone but not had any luck so any clever bods out there

who can help me out as cheap as possible please? thanks

i'm no expert but i'd happily take a look

 

it might just want a good (virtual) clear out and tune up to make it run better

 

not sure how well a machine that's a few years old will run vista but if it's got enough RAM and a dual core processor it should be OK - don't think it's essential to update the OS, i'm still happily using XP and so are lots of people

Don't go with Vista. It's terrible

 

Stick with XP for an older PC, and have a good "virtual" clear out

thanks guys ive defragmented the hard drive + cleared lots of

old stuff off it + its slightly better but she needs the stuff on there

for the work for school, does anyone have the programs that i need

who can put them on for me + maybe boost up the memory too

before putting a new o/s system on it you need to know the specs....vista/windows 7 are very hungry from mem or processor power

The best way you can speed up any 'abused' machine is to re-image it. Wack the recovery disk in it, if its a dell, or a toshiba etc. Or wipe it and pop a basic OS on there. Not Vista, not 7, XP or even windows 2000 if its that old.

I would do it for you, I do it in my sleep, for work. But I'm probably not local to you.

 

Ps. Before you give it to anyone, back up your files and clear off any data which you don't want others to have - bank details, etc etc.

ok chaps it a "home made" comp not dell/toshiba or any name.

i checked the details of it + below is what it has....

 

windows xp proffesional 2002

amd duron prossesor 1.20ghz

384 mb of ram

realtek rtl8139 ethernet

 

all that mens nothing to me

one upgrade you can do is put more mem in it....windows xp needs 256mb just to run and you have 384mb.and i suspect your graphics card is porb using some of your memory has well....which will slow it down even more....

 

their is a certain amount motherboards will except on memory depending how many slots you have and the highest they will allow

 

if you have the manual for the motherboard it should tell you the max it will allow or if you find the model and no of the motherboard it can be found out on the net......their will be a name and model printed on the motherboard or use a program like lavalys to give you these details......but the specs you have given so far are not good enough for anthing higher than xp

you could take the side off and get a torch out and have a look at the mothership for its ranking ..........or be ultra lazy bum and download a program that will tell you the info

i'd be surprised if you couldn't up it to 1gb of ram - that'd make a lot of difference

i opened the box up but there was no name on the mothership,

i rang a mate + he told me to unplug the two cicuit board things

that were next to each other, he said these are the memory so i'm

taking them to a comp shop tommorow + asking for more memory.

i'm hoping i can just put them in + speed it up

it will help alkot having more memory....but you really need to know the max that the m/b will allow......has all are capped at a sertain amount older m/b's are norm maxed at 1gb or 2gb and some times even less....more modern ones will take up to 4gb how many slots do you have for the memory?

 

might be easier if you take your case with you has they should be able to tell you the max it will allow when you buy the memory......also try and get matching pairs has they work better together

well i took the memory boards down to the comp shop + after

a bit of faffing about they sold me another 256mb one, they told

me i could go home + put all three (i have three slots) in it so

i have + now ive got 640mb of ram + its exactly the fookin same!
