mk1super Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 A Renault Clio 1.8 16V or Williams one? my mates looking at getting one, looking to spend up to or around 1500 most he has seen around that price have did over 100k which has put him off big time, should this be a worry or not? Also what should you be looking for, ie wheres the rust spots etc Do they suffer any engine or suspension issues that you should check for? Someone mentioned to my mate they have dodgy steering racks that can break and need welding . Any info welcome

When they're good, they are good though, quick, nimble and cheap enough to fix with a good internet following etc. Bear in mind you can get an early 172 now for a couple of grand.

When my Mrs passes her test, im thinking of getting another as a daily.
bangar Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 Ive got a 1.8 16v. was a 1 owner with 47k full renault history till i got it. I let my brother drive it since we got it, and if you need to change the cambelt engine out, and if the clutch needs changing engine out. We've had it over 3 years and done about 20k, and its good. Like anything they have little problems But they are an awesome little car, loads of fun to drive great in the corners and they aint slow. The clutch pedal is the ratchet type which is crap gives a very heavy pedal, the spring on the pedal loses its tension, the teeth on the ratched wear (comes as a complete pedal) and the clutch cable can become sticky as its close to the manifold, clutch fork can bend. If your changing the clutch modify, go the reanult5 setup saves alot of agro trust me. Engines like to run hot, has an electric water pump that comes on when the engine is turned off and switches the fan on to. The exhaust will be mega hot for ages after the cars turned off. I got this as p/x from my customer for £300 12 months mot and 10 months tax. Changing the oil filter is abit fiddly not alot of room. I think there good cars.

V8ian Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 Watch out for a klunky gearbox, its actually the diff, eventually the diff hammers the circlip out of the end of the diff, gearboxes are at apremium for this, I eventually welded the circlip onto the diff shim to stop it popping out, Subframes bend just with enthusatic driving, My sons roof creased around the sunroof after goung over a pothole, Top Mounts go on a regular basis, if its lowered they pull the bottom ball joint apart, drive shafts break, and the PAS packs up when you dont expect it. Try and find one without ABS, they are bad news when they go wrong, and a good exhaust manifold works wonders, They are good fun cars if you can drive it without it breaking, dont forget they are nearly 20 years old now, and will not have had an easy life
DAZZA Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 I had a R19 16V chamade, about 10 years ago. It cost 3 Grand. It cost another 4 grand in garage bills over the next year. May have just been bad luck, but id never take the risk again. Went like a bastard though!
