gearbox question

how much latteral play should the be on the input shaft on a ford 4 speed? i think i have 3mm or so feels a bit too much to me

may be 2 mm/ 3mm at most i would of thought

there is a bit i once thought shit theres alot of play there but it was ok didnt cause any problems

The input shaft and the output shaft are by their nature seperate! This means, as said above, they wobble around like a shaft thats broken in the middle. There is a bearing between them but they rely on the spiggot bearing in the back of the crank and the prop-shaft supporting the shafts to keep them in line. With the gearbox out you'll see lots of slack so it's not a great way to check for wear....

the gearbox's ive used have always had play in them but have always seemed to run fine.

as said above i don't think its a good way of finding out if a gearbox is any good.

cheers guys, its seemed ok well was running fine until i took it out. I just gave it a wiggle (as you do!) and wondered!!
