cortinasgoneforaburton Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 In January with all the snow i had a starting issue with my discovery luckily it only needed a battery. Feb was mot time a broken spring and its first bit of welding plus a good service, the garage i use is owned by a family member so i got some new tyres for the cortina and they were put on bill as disco ones, the bill will be paid through my haulage outfit. During the service a new belt tensioner was fitted this then caused the water pump to start leaking new one of those on the bill then the header tank started leaking, and yes all you mechanics reading this headgasket failure soon followed. Amazingly it still runs perfect but after every journey i have to undo the bleed screw and let all the air out. the bill so far is nearly £600 with a further £400 + vat for the headgasket to be done
Jiffer Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I,ve been running discos and range rovers for years and once they start playing up they can turn into a real money pit, yet others seem to plod on forever. remeber talking to a mechanic at a dealership about an oil leak on mine, he said they all come with those as standard and if they dont leak oil they take them back and make sure they do I feel for you mate
andy a Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I've been tempted to buy one as a tow vehicle a few times but always ended up getting something else due to the potential for repair bills, just had a clear out of cars and was once again thinking about them, guess I'll be shying away again now
cortinasgoneforaburton Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 id keep it but it only does 25mpg and i do 50mile a day to work as i work for myself i really need to save costs
Jiffer Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 don't get me wrong I love the dicos for towing and don't think you will ever beat them for towing, I current tow with a 07 mitsi warriour and it does not compare with the disco, I do tend to take them to there limit and I allways have the confidence in the disco especialy when it comes to stopping a 3 tonne digger, I would never hesitate in buying another, but cant fit tools and people as easy.
4DOOR-SHERWOOD Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I have a 2002 Disco TD5 that I use for towing and it is a great tool! i bought it 4 years ago and its sometimes parked up for a couple of months when I dont need it, never fails to fire up! I thought about gettin shot of it for a pickup but decided not to waste my cash and stay with the old thing!! some times we get a gud un and sometimes we dont!
cortinasgoneforaburton Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 dont get me wrong i love my disco it was one car i never wanted my mate swears by them and then the father in law got one. I looked a at few but nothin grabbed me until mine turned up, mines the only bright red one round near me ive had it nearly 2 years and apart from changing the oil and filters ive only spent £80 on it in repairs. Ive been offered £1200 as it is but the thought of having to buy a car based on how efficient it is on fuel is really filling me with dread as work has just started picking up and my last months fuel bill for 1 truck was £3400 i am seriously loosing sleep over this
Admin Mk2Jo Posted May 5, 2010 Admin Report Posted May 5, 2010 We bought our N reg Disco in 2008 so that we could tow the car comfortably out to Malta and we used it again in 2009 Been a great motor Thinking about giving it up now though cos Ian has a new job 40 miles away and so the fuel bill(even though it's a diesel) is a killer
Wessie Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 just bought an m reg disco, bits are so cheap for it ! just ordered a clutch kit, complete exhaust system (inc de-cat pipe), filter kit, release fork, water pump and a cam belt - all for 180quid ! just got to stick it on some big rims and buy some winches and a snorkel . . . love it
