caprimark3 Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 I'm looking to buy my first classic ford. And I've always wanted a mk3 Capri. But I'm unsure of what engine Would be the best choice? My plan was to strip it out fit bucket seats etc, play around with the engine in a garden shed in my spare time, And go drag racing. I have some mechanical know how. And I know that a tuned 2 litre 4pot can give great performance, but is it better to just have pure displacement? Any suggestions please? Cheers Mark
caprinerd Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 go the 2.0 pinto and leave the 2.8 the pinto is more tunable and easier to work on there aint much you can do to the 2.8 as the siemease ports are very restrictive and to have the heads worked to get rid of them is expensive stick to pinto good and strong
vibrating_Cake Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 2.0 best of both worlds, can be easily tuned to 2.8 speeds and above plus gives better mpg+less weight to throw around and worry about... ohh and more room in the engine bay for toys
garyv6100e Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 essex 3.0 2nd that , stage 3 heads V63 cam triple webers you know it makes sense
squadge78 Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 essex with triple webers would be ace but for realistic running a 2.0 pinto
GT_lenny Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 i had a 2.0laser when i was 19- it just would not die despite all the abuse i gave it
NeilT Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Pinto all day long easy and cheepish to play around with!!
banarama Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Cologne!!! it depends on the quality of the build i have no trouble/ not boasting or nothing
stevepeanut Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 I've owned 2.0 and 2.8 capris if you want to leave it standard go for the 2.8i decent ish power and lovely v6 growl but if you want to tune and do things to the motor go for a pinto, standard 100bhp, and 200+ is being achieved by some people
caprimark3 Posted May 18, 2010 Author Report Posted May 18, 2010 Yeh. I wasn't planning on keeping it standard for very long, think it's going to have to be a pinto. I want something relatively cheap and easy to play around with.
turbo-mike Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 I cant under stand why people saying pinto when with the 2.8 you get 160 bhp ,power steering, recaros, billys, and if a special a lsd as standard, it would cost over a grand to get that fitted to a pinto and thats not including the motor. and as I found out to get about 180 bhp out of a pinto I had been told it would cost between 2-4k, I don't do engine work so can only go on what I was told, so I will be getting rid of the pinto capri I got and turboing my 2.8 and that will only cost about 1500 and that gives me 200bhp all day long. So as you can tell for me 2.8. mike
vibrating_Cake Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 yep, but you can also boost a pinto you're talking about N/A costs . also it all depends on what you use it for. tbh turbo technics 2.0 and tt 2.8... yes you can do both and the sky is the limit lol. yeah 2.8's are probably more comfortable with power steering&recaros... but lsd's only came in the 2.8 S's???? i wouldnt have a 2.8 over a 2.0 because of the shier weight of the v6 engine, wouldnt bode well on many tracks like rockingham etc, or the recaros

SmokeEm Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 a warmed pinto will blast a 2.8i all day long. And as for you Turbo Mike.. fit your turbo kit and well see you at classic ford where you will yet again be humiliated by our pinto cappa
2litreScapri Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Pinto, mainly because of insurance reasons! But as echoed here, tunable Pintos are damn good engines
JP. Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 I cant under stand why people saying pinto when with the 2.8 you get 160 bhp ............ turboing my 2.8 and that will only cost about 1500 and that gives me 200bhp all day long. So as you can tell for me 2.8. mike 2.8's only had 160 bhp in the brochure Like the 3.0 Essex had only 136bhp in the brochure... For real the 2.8 injector had 148 bhp For real the Essex lump had 145 bhp but way more torque than a Cologne 2.8. And about 200 bhp from a Cologne V6 all day long.........not even in your dreams. They are not reliable enough to handle that much power all day long. If you want real power for money Id say Pinto. If you want torque from low down go Essex V6.
vibrating_Cake Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 and if you want both go tuned zetec! *runs and hides* hehehehehehehe

All I can say is my old 2.8 turbo had done 130k on its engine and that was from a kit fitted when new, so yes on that all day long. but come on look at how much it costs to get a pinto up to v6 power and even then it just sonuds like a fart, Come on smoke em you know I will shoot my load to quick at santa pod and it will all end in embarassment for me again. mike
