mk2escortmad
hi guys, i have stripped the bad paint job from the roof of my escort ( just the poor layers so i can rub down ) and have pitting in the metal. now i know i am going to have to fill these in but the pitting has some surface rust in it. whats the best way to remove the surface rust?? sorry if this seems long winded lol
supersport
wire wheel in a grinder works, will take all the paint off aswell though.

supersport
it's not as harsh as a grinding disc, so leave more metal on the car.
GT_lenny
dont do moere than about 5 minutes at a time in any one spot though as it can still put a fair bit of heat into a panel- which may distort it
mk2escortmad
oh right, thanks for the advice lenny, i didnt think of that
supersport
yeah, same as when you use a mop on a car, keep it moving.
Fishtailparka
Then wipe it with Kurust or similar, then wire wheel again then etch prime. That will see it off.

5hane
flap discs rock , they dont leave as much damage as a grinding disc !! they will cut wayyy to much metal off the pannel though
Skoty
best way is to sand blast it. if you use kiln dried sand its no to harsh on the metal. but you'll need to own or know someone with a sandblaster.
mk2escortmad
i used the gel stuff but it only worked a bit, in the end i used a wire brush in a drill. looked as though it worked, left slight rust colour but i think its just dyed the metal in places. i have now covered the roof in etch primer and tomorrow i will skim the roof with filler to get rid of the pits
xpackken
flap discs rock , they dont leave as much damage as a grinding disc !! they will cut wayyy to much metal off the pannel though not the carbon flap wheels , available at machine mart but 7quid a pop and they dont last very long they are good thou
baz105e
i wouldnt advise using anything other than one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-NEW-ANGLE-GRIND ... 2a08ba4945 they rip streight through the paint but dont touch the metal underneath, they last quite a long time, dont try using anything abrasive like http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/115mm-FLAP-SANDIN ... 45f26fe25c as you will deffo mess the metal up underneath
