Quaife ?

Dont bother with them. I upgraded as i thought they would be better, but kept fookin them. I have now gone back to standard shafts and not broke one. i run 9" slicks on mine

What spline Quaife did you use Andy ? Standard 22 spline or 16,18 as I used standard 22 spline in my hot rod for years with 9" slicks and never broke one

But have done this to a shaft with 185/60 Yoko 539's

I have been drag racing with then on a prepped strip

I now have got Quaife 16 tooth atlas shafts

When I looked in to this i found the 22 spline Quaife shafts were EN24 Steel but the 16 spline was EN30 Steel better quality so I went for them

My advice is always go for the fattest shafts you can. The strength equation for shafts uses the diameter x 4 in it. This means, steel grades aside, the diameter is the most important aspect of a shaft.

This really means you ideally go for anything other than the standard 22 spline. This leaves you a few options.

16 spline with a quaife ATB or a Tran-X plate diff with 16 spline side gears. Quaife will tell you an ATB will look after standard shafts in the way they distribute the power - my thoughts were if I'm buying a diff I might as well get the strongest.

The above therefore lead me to a Tran-X diff with 18 spline side gears and the fat 18 spline shafts. The thinking being you only buy this lot once! (so far so good).

There is a whole other debate in here about diffs but I'd got to the point of boredom with breaking shafts, usually 100's of miles from home at Pod, hence going 18 spline.

These 18 spline shafts are in Dave Colledges, Andy Harris, Baz's (on the gas) to name a few, so have a proven record of taking lots of grief!

I'm afraid I don't know the measurements of Mk2 axles so can't help you there.

The other option, which may be cheeper is an axle transplant - Atlas axles weigh a lot more than an English, will need shortening unless you can find a baby Atlas (expensive), but do come with 16 spline shafts as standard, which as said earlier aren't as strong as 18 spline.

Hope this helps.
