westcoastmarek Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 ok, i live in canada so this might seem like a stupid question but... i saw an osf for sale and the ad said the car includes plate worth $$$$. we can't sell plates in bc, canada. they are property of the insurance corporation. just curious how this works in the UK. how are the plates valued? marek
Admin Vista Posted October 31, 2010 Admin Report Posted October 31, 2010 Plates here are registered to the car when new and generally stay with it. However they can be transferred between vehicles for a fee and are generally known as personalised or private registration plates. There are two common reasons for wanting a personalised plate, to hide the age of the car or to spell out a name or word that is in someway related to the owner or car. In 1963 age related plates were introduced so any numberplate from before then typically attracts good money. The value being higher for specific types i.e. with just one number or all matching numbers. Some plates attract huge money, I believe Paul Daniels (Magician) owns MAG1C, this would fetch silly money if he were to auction it. Have a look here for some examples of what people can do and what they sell for http://www.newreg.co.uk/
westcoastmarek Posted October 31, 2010 Author Report Posted October 31, 2010 wow, you could buy a descent car for the cost of some of those plates... Thanks for the explanation... here in british columbia, anyone can buy a personalized plate for $100(within the rules laid out by ICBC) but i am not sure if it can be sold to someone else... anyways, if the plate isn't renewed every year, you lose the rights to the slogan cheers
emu Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 The other thing is that DVLA, who are in charge of issuing the numbers, is a government department/ agency thingy. There is some good money to be made selling the numbers which 'sort' of spell something
Pipster007 Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 There is some good money to be made selling the numbers which 'sort' of spell something I thought of purchasing PA05 HEA for my Golf and when I saw they wanted £3,500 a few months ago I thought...........Fook That!!!!!!!! I'll make do with what they issued to the car originally
