is it a 49 shell

hello i'm new here and i need all the help i can get please forgive me if this post is in the wrong area,

i have just purchased a rot box mk1 1973 escort i payed far to much for it ( i think anyway) it was advertised as a 49 shell, so anyway i got the car and proceeded to make sure all the 49 bit are in the right place which they are, now here is the question did they produce them in Germany as that is where this one was made and it also has the chassis number ccatmy07797 which does not seem right for a 49 shell ? can any body shed some light on my new money pit.

incidentally it ticks all the box's in the in old skool fords '' how to recognize a 49 shell ''

chassis number wrong but could have been imported from Oz Malta cyprus etc if its rhd,but check to see if its been converted from left to right then maube germany or other euro country,or somebody has welded the 49 bits on

hi thanks for getting back to me, it is left had drive (forgot that bit) and made as far as i can ascertain in Saalouis in Germany, as far as the 49 bits being added later i really don't think so the reinforced front suspension tops are factory spot welded the anti tramp bars on the rear axle are original it just all looks right if you know what i mean, ? what are your thought?

from what i can see G = w germany

second letter denotes model A = escort

third letter is body type T = 2 door

fourth letter denotes year built N = 1973

fifth letter denotes engine size L = 1599cc

+ the sixth should be a number ie 1 = ohv so i'm really confused now

 

so what i am saying is from my book your car should be something like...

GATNL107797

but export stuff sometimes have weird plates on them

but saying that if your plate is hard to read it might be like the one above +

not start CC but just G if you see what i mean

Isn't there a 'Type 48' shell that was pretty much T49 spec but not done at AVO?

I've seen a few foreign shells with factory strut top plates etc

type 48 were export shells and very similar to type49 shells as used at avo cars

The only bits i can decipher from good old google are the AT for 2 door escort and MY is Oct 1972. So it looks like a 1972 build but registered in 73.

 

Cant seem to find what the CC part is but i think B is britain and G is Germany for the first one and the second C is Saarlouis.

 

GCAT cars are mk2 RS, BFAT are mk1 AVO cars

My mk1 GT is BBAT.

 

I think the numbers relate to transmission, engne, colour , trim etc

 

I dont think youve got an RS, def not an AVO one anyway!

LHD Mk1 RS models were built in Germany though weren't they? not AVO. The Mk1 RS2000 was available in LHD before it was in RHD

i have been taking the numbers off the import paper work and on closer inspection they are wrong the first letter is a G so it reads GCATMY07797,

So what do you guys think ?
