Cossy turbo or zetec turbo .

 

After seeing a zebec turbo last night in action i want one :shock: I have herd that the zetec is not as realiable as a cosworth lump?

zetec is reliable mate if built with the correct parts lots running 450hp and not having any probs :thumbsup:

At the end of the day they are both 2 litres and have 16 valves so will give similar performance if built to a similar spec.

 

The main difference is the Cosworth engine comes with strong crank/rods/pistons as standard and ports and cams etc.. suited to turbo whereas the zetec is only required to produce around 125 bhp n/a reliably.

Steve after seeing cosworths go and zebec turbo's i would of thought that they would whip there butts? I suppose its a lot cheaper to build a cosworth or am i wrong?

My mates got a 200sx as a drift car running 350 BHP and goes like shit. He's whole engine set up didn't cost alot compared to getting a cosworth/zetec turbo to that spec of Bhp.

 

I think that'll be my engine of choice after I've blown the pinto up :lol:

i would have thought a cossie turbo would be alot easier than zetec turbo as its supposed to be turbo anyway been about for years an all the parts are easy to get an any pitfalls have ben sorted an on the plus side its rwd to start with no rwd convertion parts needed an will bolt up into any pinto hole almost imeditaly but a little fettle here an there its in

easy solution and cheap. put your proper engine in get it tuned propley and drive it theres no such thing as a undrivable race engine as ive proved a million times :beer:

I've had the same dilemma myself. My car's currently got a BMW M42 engine in (1.8 16v), but I thought I'd go back to Ford and purchased some Zetec bits (for sale BTW) with a view to turboing it up. My mates got a 302 V8 he wanted me to put in so I thought about that and I also thought about supercharging the BMW M44 (1.9 16v) engine I have in the garage. My decision? The BMW engines are good solid units, my car is already set up for one and they use Gartrag gearboxes as standard so the forged crank is coming out of the M42, going into the M44 with a set of forged rods and pistons and wild cams and I'm gonna aim for 220 n/a bhp with a stratospheric rev limit. Escorts were made to be 4 pot screamers (BDG and 10,000rpm anyone!) so that's what it's getting. Might not win a game of top trumps down the pub but I'll be able to use all of the power most of the time. Turbos or superchargers come with increased cost (inlet piping, intercoolers, dump valves, boost controllers etc etc) on the top of n/a.

To cut a long story short, put whatever you want in that does the job for you and don't jump on any bandwagon.

Neither are cheap or easy to fit,despite what some might say.

 

They both have there pitfalls, but the biggest problem I can see is the

 

oil pump on the Zetec as Liams mk1 tina zetec turbo kept finding out.

 

If you want sub 400bhp, go for a cossy turbo everyday .

I love a nice pinto of crossflow but after puting in the zetec in the prefect i love it and once you have sorted out the bits to make it go in they are very cheap and very very reliable the last one cost me 100 quid and lasted 5+ years of being thrashed before it started burning a bit of oil and my new one cost me 120 quid for a very low millage blacktop and as i have no money it suits me.

As for simons turbo ed st zetec he had it rolling roaded that day and it was pushing out 350bhp on low boost and goes and sounds like a jet plane last time he went past me i nearly burst a ear drum. :lol:

Interesting post!

 

I'm a massive fan of both engines.

 

I went for a Zetec turbo as I know the engines well having dabbled in Fiestas for some years along with Cossies etc...

Mine is a fresh built engine, with steel rods and forged pistons, a mildly ported head, standard cams, nice manifolds and a GT30.71 turbo on Omex 600. It's made 329bhp at 14psi so far to run in on and is expected to make 450bhp at 1.7bar happily.

 

The whole lot has cost the same as secondhand YB that's had no rebuild and an 'old skool' T34 turbo which wouldn't be able to make the same power my Zetec set up does.

 

So which is better? Bang for buck I'd say Zetec personally, though I'm still a massive fan of the YB.

 

For all out power though, there's no denying YBs are better engines in terms of strength etc... but you unless you're trying to find the limts does it matter? Most classic Fords run no more than 400bhp tops.

 

The Zetec oil pump issue is a problem, but there seems to be an easy way round it which I'll be investigating!
