petrolhead Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 I've just come back from a drive in my Mk2 and the little red battery lght is starting to glow. The last time this happened it was the regulator diode on the alternator and a very nice RAC man changed the alternator for me. Problem was that was only 2 years and 4000miles ago. I've gone through 3 alternators in 8000miles. I've already got a smaller crankshaft pulley but inevitably the alternator prob still gets subjected to more revs and more vibration as standard on my modified engine. Does anyone know an especially long lasting replacement/make/type I can get? It doesnt need to be high output.
deltamal Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Iv'e got one of Burton's high output ones to cope with the Nos bottle heater and 8,000 rpm, it's been on the engine for a couple of years and still good but not cheap! might be worth a look on fleabay for a genuine Lucas one...
BIG G Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Back in the day i used to do an alternator about every 3 months. get a high output one from a pinto and spin the casing so it fits the x flow simples
Tom Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Really? I'm sure spinning the casing won't work. Surely, or am I just being thick?
Toby Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 I used to get through alternators too. A nice man at Lucus suggested fitting a transit one - I think - from a diesel engine. He said it had "c type" diodes which were better with vibration. It could have been this or the fact that it was a diffent shape / weight which probably altered the frequency at which it vibrates at, either way it seemed to work. Sorry I can't be more helpfull and supply a Part No. This does only mean I get through one every 3 years or so....not a complete cure.
petrolhead Posted August 8, 2011 Author Report Posted August 8, 2011 Cheers guys, I'll bring it in to the alternator place near Tolworth girls and see what they say.
