Well my new baby arrived last night and I am not sure what to do next.

She is a dirty girls so I will clean her tonight and see what lies beneath.

Inside:

The interior is in really good condition apart from a couple of missing trims.

Outside:

There is a lot of paint peel with some surface rust begining, a 1.5 inch hole in the pasenger side door skin and a bit of rot behind the front wheel arches, but nothing too bad.

Engine:

the 1600 pinto is a runner in need of a clean and a tune. A new battery and starter motor are required.

This is my first project so I chose this car as it is pretty solid already. I want to remove rust and rot, re paint, tune up, MOT and then drive.

But where do I start, what should I consentrate on. I am in no rush, I want to do it right.

Any advice will be great.

Yes I like that!

Rust investigation and a stripped interior, I think I can handle that.

I should add this will not be a total nut and bolt strip down, as I do not have the knowledge or a suitable place to do that yet. But the interior can be stripped and the engine can be removed. I will need to lock it up at night.

I will give it a good wash when I get home and I should be able to see how bad the rust is.

This is great keep it coming.

when you take out the interior i would suggest you get some little food bags + put your different screws + clips in, some of the screws are different length or can be a different thread too. for example if when you take a door panel off mark the bag nearside door fixings + it will save you loads of time + swearing later on. :) also on a tricky part you remove take a couple of pics of how it fixes on the car, really handy if your putting it back on a year later !. good luck

I'd be putting it in a garage to start with, so it doesnt get nicked!

I cleaned her tonignt and there really is very little rust and rot.

I pulled back the carpets and guess what!!???!!!!

Solid! I must be one of the lucky ones. I will take some pics at the weekend when there is some light and I will show you what I mean..

I don't think I mentioned before but the car has been stored in a dry store for the 8 years and out side for the last year, this may be why the body work is in such good condition.

I did find another tiny rust hole in the bonnet, but thats not hard to deal with.

Any ideas where i would get a starter motor from?

that's good news  you could try escort-tec or g.s escorts for the starter both have rooms on here,

or you could put a post on the osf parts wanted room + try some motor factors.

This is what I did:

  • [*:ncpw39q7]Strip the whole car, take photos of the process, and put all parts in labelled squeeze closure bags
[*:ncpw39q7]paint remover for all of the outside panels
[*:ncpw39q7]sand blasting solid areas like interior dash/floor, underside, engine bay, pillars
[*:ncpw39q7]panel beater for rust cutting fitting engine, gearbox tunnel, etc
[*:ncpw39q7]take back to the garage and test fit all the parts and mods
[*:ncpw39q7]strip the whole car again, and off to paint

And that's almost all of my last 3 years! In all I took it about 3 times to the panel beater, once for engine and gearbox related mods, once for rust, and once more for further mods like shocks and other small things after the test fit, but yours being a Capri you're probably sorted in one visit.

And most importantly!!!! Start a thread in projects and restorations and get your photos and descriptions of what you intend to do on there, so the helpful people of the forum can give you their input if they spot something not right.

That's all great advice.....

Thanks. I feel a bit more prepared now.

I will start the stripping at the weekend, get snapping with the camera then start up a project thread.

I have waited years to do this.
