st 170, Ive ben told the way i have the vvt set up Im losing power, I would like to hit the 220 mark got a fair budget but its coming out to much at the mo.

Getting them to make that sort of power costs a whole lot of money. I'd be more inclined to go forced induction! Either turbo or supercharger? I recently bought a Jackson Racing Zetec supercharger kit complete for around £500, which with a smaller pulley is 220bhp.

engine is standard, decent exhaust running bike carbs and vvt switched to come in at 1500 revs.

my plan was to buy a crate motor 2l black top, then have the head and cams done run it on 45s with a decent 3d ecu but its getting over my budget.

or have mine bored fit a new cnc head and cams, so i lose the vvt and again 45s and ecu.

i know the st engine has a stronger bottom end but would have thought a new engine could cope with 7.5k for the strip runs

I'd rebuild your one. Cam and compression make a big difference to these and any engines.

Go with a cam combo that has a difference in duration for inlet and exhaust,but no more than 290 degrees. Find one that has high lift, with 16v heads you're better loosing duration for more lift. Get some bigger valves and have them fitted and valve throats blended,avoid massive ports. You need air speed. Ford weren't silly when they designed there engines.

Ask whoever does this for you to port balance and make sure the installed height of springs are matched.

Then get head chambers cc'd.

I'd look at a good 4 into 1 decent exhaust manifold. Roughly speaking longer the runner the better,usually around the 25-30 inches.

Then lighten pistons and crank as far as safely to produce a quick spinning motor.

I'd take as much piston skirt off as I could safely go. A light steel flywheel would be what I would use. If funds are there some stronger rods too. I'd also increase the end float on crank and rods to prevent bind at high revs. New shells and rings throughout.

A high pressure oil pump,aim for about 70psi and no more. When fitting back together ditch vvc and dial cams in. Also use arp or similar bolts throughout too.

When running in for first 20 miles use it hard,take no note of the 3000 rule,mates have built hotrod pinto engines,got them fitted and running on Saturday and raced Sunday without issue,these were built like these and are plenty quick. Only issues higher reving Zetec engines have us the oil pumps. Build an engine to rev higher than you plan on using and you should have a strong reliable motor. Rolling road setting up and jobs a goodun.

Always use a trusted RR and one who does all work from wheel figures and not estimated crank figure.

If you deal with a good machine shop,explaining what you're doing,paying cash and get all machining done at same time,you'd might be able to do a deal on cost.

Same as build it up yourself,only getting cams dialed in by specialist,plenty of them on here to help and advised,like HPE,Vulcan,Ashton,etc.

All come highly recommended and worth a call to see if they can help and advise you,check and can check what you've done and set up what you can't .

anyone can bolt an engine together but putting one together is a whole different world IE checking all tolerances are correct and if not putting then right once out of the machine shop theres plenty of sponsors on here who can help mr jiffer there just a phone call away :thumbsup:

Do it your self and get the fiddly bits done by people who know what they're doing.

Why spend £3000 on an engine when you can get the virtually same results but reading all info about your chosen engine,preferred methods of tuning,pitfalls,etc.

Then measure measure measure,dismantle and off the machine and get them doing what you want. Reassemble and measure measure measure and get it checked over and cam dialled by the specialists.

Half the satisfaction of these cars is building them ourselves.

Plus if you get within 10 bhp of a full blown race engine then you'll be well chuffed!

already running an st170 but just seems to be not giving the power i want, Ive had quotes for a new built zetec from some people and its just to high for a motor running over 220, I also considered having my st engine re-built with new head so i lose the vvt but no one seems interested.

i think to get a real 220hp will cost you too much,just buy a turbo kit and leave the engine standard 6 to 8psi of boost will see around the 240hp mark,someone i know has been running one in a focus for 3 years like this and has had no issues.if you put rods pistons arps etc then you can run more than you could dream of :thumbsup:

Jiffer have a think what you want to do ,but i may have a solution for you as the guy with the focus is selling it to buy a scooby and it will have most parts you need you will have to alter some but its got omex 600 ecu genuine garret turbo etc and around 1500 for the whole car

Why not look at getting an engine out of a focus rs? its a volvo engine so get an ovlov box and bobs ya uncle, there like 300 bhp arnt they

bring the ST down to croydon. :thumbsup: or throw the bike carbs in the bin first get some side draughts then see the difference first then tune it from there

thats was allways my plan if i dont go turbo was going to run it on 45 dcoes. but Ive been told so many conflicting things such as lose the vvt, get 3d map, need a cnc head for that power, just dont know enough about it to know which way to go, Thats why i went to dunnell, dont get me wrong his stuff looks top notch but at nearly 7k to rich for my blood
