thats was allways my plan if i dont go turbo was going to run it on 45 dcoes. but Ive been told so many conflicting things such as lose the vvt, get 3d map, need a cnc head for that power, just dont know enough about it to know which way to go, Thats why i went to dunnell, dont get me wrong his stuff looks top notch but at nearly 7k to rich for my blood

First ask yourself where you want the power? Top or bottom? Check out crossflow and pinto hot rod cam profiles. Been around years,and hot rod boys use one gear so need a big spread of power. Make note of duration and lift. Find something close to them.

Next when you know what cam you're using and maximum lift is talk to dunnell,ask him has he used this cam? Does his heads go near a flow bench? Any decent head has been on a flow bench at some point,if so ask what his big valve heads are like regarding specific lift and cfm. The higher cfm at max lift the more power. But at a low pressure. Once head and cam combo is sorted next compression to make use of duration. Max duration is 12.5:1 with our highest octain fuel. Even then it's close. That sort of compression is really for the 295+ cams. Then carbs. 45 is a good set I'd go for 48's as you can always make them smaller if needed. The vvc set up won't give you oh my god difference but should be nicer and smoother. BMW M3's use it and they shift. Then build bottom end up. Getting one of the engine builders here to help give pointers and check it all over. Then get on rollers and tuned for torque

already running an st170 but just seems to be not giving the power i want, Ive had quotes for a new built zetec from some people and its just to high for a motor running over 220, I also considered having my st engine re-built with new head so i lose the vvt but no one seems interested.

Suprised Colin Ashton is'nt interested as he done a nice one for my mates escort and sorted his mates anglia st170 , have you tried steve at vulcan or wayne at wpe ?

oliwally thanks for all the info, i am going to try and get my head round it but it seems somewhat out of my league, drawings to build a school yes easy, :thumbsup:

Think i'd go for a 50 shot of NOS on your current engine. Approx 1k fitted by KJ and only there when you want it and of course is transferrable car to car.

I have considered nitrous but quite frankly it scares the shit outa me, I just think of tipping petrol on an allreay lite fire. :)

Jiff just turbo it cheep bang for the money your engine at say 8 to 10psi on a small turbo so will have boost from very low down should see 240 to 250 with standard internals,the yanks rekon 300 hp but 250 to be safe :thumbsup:

You can turbo an st170 lump with the vvt still! A mate of mine has 1 and it is running 350bhp and runs a 12 sec 1/4 at the pod on road tyres and a dying t5 box! So yes it is possible to get good power out of them with the vvt, and it runs on a megasquirt ecu! Home built and a monster!

 

A cheap way for 250hp is a zetec with calibra turbo pistons, efi, turbo and you will see that power easy with not too much boost! Anything is possible if you put your mind to it and listen to people that have done it not what people think is possible!

Power is power, but how that power is made is just as important.

I drove a T-5R for 4 years as my daily. Ended up hating how it started to boost up at the point of changing gear when going for gentle drive.

That was on low boost too.

i agree to a certain extent but for the money you spend ie 300hp n/a yb engine anywhere from 15k to 25k a turbo yb with same hp will stand you at 2k including buying it

But one will be faster than the other, horsepower isn't just horsepower, although both have their pro's and con's.

Trouble going turbo is the massive mid range torque when it boosts hard. An English will shit itself very quickly. Same to for the box and brakes. If horse power is what you want the turbo/supercharge it. But pick wisely. Drivability is key. Select one that best suits what you'll be using it for most. Look at Andy H's pinto, that's a pretty quick motor. Faster than a few mild tuned turbos with nearly twice the power. And let's not forget the humble crossflow. Quite a few on here are into the 12's at the strip. The same sort of times a Sierra cosworth with a stage 1 tune manages. Best engine by far is a bdg but unless you win lottery it's never going to happen. Best off seeing if any members on here will take you out in their cars and let you judge what you want.

i know what your saying and im not getting into a debate but sierras weighs alot more than most the oldskool stuff,but for example take tillbrooks car ,mk1 escort standard yb motor with stage 1 tune so 280hp runs 11s nothing fancy but a quick motor on his tiny turbo,and ran all year with no engine issues as far as im aware,oh and runs an english axle and drives it very hard :thumbsup:

The thing I don't like I don't like is their power delivery. Oh and as standard they look messy under the bonnet. Pipes,wires,hoses everywhere. I like the clean look and growling carbs lol

most of the pintos/cross flows are about to blow up as they go through the line in 4 gear flat out, my car goes through the line ready to change into 5 th. its 300bhp its ran 11.8s its on a english axle.i let it off the line at 7300rpm and i run slicks. the cosworth starts on the flick of switch unlike most big carb engines, so i think turbo power is the way forward :thumbsup:
