Car Value - Mk2 Escorts 2002 vs 2012

I've heard a few people recently say:

 

"If you buy the real deal, it's a good investment. Much better than a pension. So I thought I'd work it out. Obviously we all own classic cars as we love them and the below negates the money spent on improvements/wear and tear. The situation assumes the car is bought, wrapped and left with no condition deteriation (rofl, yeah right).

 

Looking back through a 2002 classic ford mag I found last week, tucked inside the glovebox of a car, I had a look at the sales section at the back.

 

The cheapest RS2000 I saw ('genuine') in good condition with 80k was £2000.

 

Four doors were going for around 3-400 for one with a 'sporty' 1600 xflow, a few mods here and there.

 

Today. RS2000, similar car would easily get 7-9000.

 

The 4 doors seem to be fetching around 3000.

 

Neglecting running costs, maintenance etc. Over a ten year period, if you had bought a 4 door for £300, you're money has gone up around 10 times, profit of £2700. That's a good return.

 

Similarly an Rs2000 bought for £2000, sold for £8000 would show a value of around four times that of it's initial value in 2002. Profit of £6000.

 

Working on inflation, £300 is = to £390.00 in todays money

again, with inflation £2000 is = to £2,600.00 in todays money

 

so for the four door

 

£3000 minus £390 = £2610

£2610 over ten years is £261 return per year on a (what would be) £390 investment. but we'll say £300 as it was 10 years ago. That's a return of 87% of your initial buy price per year.

 

for the RS2000

 

£8000 minus £2000 = £6000

£6000 over ten years is £600 return per year on a £2000 investment. The return per year is 33% of your initial buy price. 54% behind that of your 'moor door'

 

Assume storage is nil.

 

Your budget is £5000.

If you buy £5000 worth of 4 doors @ £300 each. that's 16 cars.

16 x £3000 is £48,000

 

Again dame budget, on RS2000's

You can only buy two of these (the remaining £1000 you have you blow in the pub)

2 x £8000 = £16,000.

 

Storing this number of cars would be difficult, costly or both. If they got nicked well. You're stuck.

 

Interesting numbers though I think you'll agree. Maybe early four door owners are more in the know that rs2000 owners? Still, not quite a nice to look at whatever you think! Which car's next to 'shoot up'?

Thats some interesting figures there, who'd have thought that a 4 door MKII was a better investment than an RS2000. Glad that in 2012 there is still interest in both.

I've often wondered this and had this conversation down the pub

 

The reason I love mk2's is i because it was my first car when i was seventeen. I then went on to have 4 of them in a row. At the time (early 90s) mk1/2 escorts were the car of choice for the teenager in sarf london, easy to mod and cheap to buy in the first place. I never paid over £300 for a 2 door (albeit they were 1.1 or 1.3 models)and having a mk2 now reminds me of good memories from back in the day

 

Anyhow, assuming this is the case maybe saxo's (wash my mouth out) will be popular with the youth of today in 30 years time? Personally i can't see it but who would of thought 30 years ago that prices for escorts would be in the tens of thousands, with a mk1 being advertised for £65k? If only we had crystal balls

Were you bored? Haha, interesting figures indeed. I bought my RS2000 in 1999 for £1400, genuine but in need of huge restoration. Perhaps I paid over the odds but it was the car for me back then. Still got it today and probably worth what you say to the right buyer if I ever sell it.

oh if I'd kept my old escorts I could retire now!!! Sold my last road rally mk1 for £700 in 99 with all the goodies on it cos I needed a new heating boiler. I could have worn another jumper but the missus didn't agree. I reckon 100e s could shoot up soon, especially with the nice builds about at the mo

its hard to say what car to buy next or should i say keep back xr3i did anyone really like them front wheel drive has killed this off maybe mk5 rs2000,i hate them all, maybe its just me but ford sort off ended after the mk2 escort.

The first Mk2s that my buddies and I bought were around £200/£250 (My second one, an absolutely mint 1600 Ghia with 32k on the clock was just £125). We said at the time that we should fill a barn with 'em. Wouldn't be so bad, but we even had access to a few good dry barns.....
