Kevin0374 Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Hi everyone I have just brought a replacement 20L pinto engine from out a rally car and really do with some advise. The engine spec Lightened and balanced Kent rally cam High pressure oil pump Twin 45 carbs The two main problem I have the oil pressure is between 90 to 100 psi is this normal with a high pressure pump, The next problem I have is really baffling me if I go for a short run say 10 miles it blows the dip stick up and pushes oil out but I have breather out let which is not even a pcv valve it's just open its down low say at oil filter level on the same side just like the stock car boys have them and I have this piped into my catch can along with the rocker cover breather all this is completely open so how can I be getting pressure up the dip stick???? Thanks for any help Kev
5tox Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 I may be completely wrong here but the dipstick problem could be caused by engine 'blow by' caused by knackered piston rings. But it does seem strange if the bottom end is vented to atmosphere
Kevin0374 Posted March 4, 2012 Author Report Posted March 4, 2012 Hi 5tox. That's what i can't understand what other ways is there for me to check the rings?
5tox Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 a compression test would tell you if the rings were gone
Kevin0374 Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 Hi. Done a compression test today all 4 cylinders were 180 to 190 psi so don't think I have a ring problem.
rallyesport04 Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 cranks hitting the dipstick lifting it up the tube seen this happen several times
Kevin0374 Posted March 6, 2012 Author Report Posted March 6, 2012 Now thats something I hadn't considered as I have a alloy sump on it an some I have notice only have a little hole for the dip stick to go into so it might not be going in correctly I'm going to have the sump off hopefully at the week end could any one tell me is it possiable to support the engine from the top and then remove the cross member to allow the the to come off or have I got to take the engine out? Thanks
rallyesport04 Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 borough a engine hoist stick 2 lift eyes on it 1 front 1 back opposite side an hold it up with this these lift eyes can be found on most unmolested pintos or simply remove the dip stick an stick a m6 bolt down it with a o'ring worked for me to get me out a muddle
Col-ashtonmobile Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 hi mate , does the oil pressure continue at that reading or does it come down as it gets hot ? , if the dipstick has been moved over say to accomodate a twin weber manifold the throw of the crank can hit it but 9 times out of 10 it will break the end of the stick off , check from your breather elbow in the block right through to your catch tank that there is no blockage , check your catch tank is clear, if your oil filler cap has a breather elbow , pull the cap apart and remove the gauze , blow down the elbow make sure is totally clear ,put a long piece of hose on and run it downwards then upward to atmosphere i,e dont connect it to the tank but make sure it faces up so it dont let oil out , test the car then and see what happens and let us know
Kevin0374 Posted March 6, 2012 Author Report Posted March 6, 2012 Hi V6col Yes the pressure stays up even when hot. Your bang on right about the dip stick sleeve yes it has been moved over so will have a look what I can do about that when I have the sump off. I will also do what you say about the breather pipes etc also just had a thought I used some fuel line pipe from the crank case breather to the catch can and now I'm wondering if the pipe is collapsing under heat. Thanks to everyone on your help on this. Kev
Col-ashtonmobile Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 yes mate fuel pipe is not ideal plus the bore is smaller than breather pipe , try some larger bore breather/emission pipe , let us know how yoiu get on mate
Fiesta Steve Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 I once saw a Pinto with webers that had the dipstick spinning like a rev counter
Col-ashtonmobile Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 I once saw a Pinto with webers that had the dipstick spinning like a rev counter Transits with pinto,s were the ones always coming loose in the block and turning when you braked hard and then when you accelerated again it would spin back towards the gearbox and you could hear it hitting the crank , because they were the wire type flexible stick they never used to break, its the solid ones that snap off when moved
