Firstly i don't want to sound ungrateful, because i know there are a lot of people that are presently out of work or looking for work,

But I've been in the same industry since 1995 (Motor trade sales) and I really want to get out, but absolutely have no idea what direction to go in......

Anyone else feel the same??

I am been driving for shell for the past 10 years, and worked for others firms the other 6 and i'm fed up of it but got nothing else to do instead, shame cos i loved the job when i first started now its a nightmare to do. H&S has gone made now its crazy the stuff i have to sit through just to drive a lorry.

We are so heavily regulated now, it's made twice as hard to do the same stuff I was doing ten years ago than it is now

So many procedures and processes, taken the fun right out of it,

Start your own business if you have the the round ones to do it, the challenge is great, as are the rewards. But hard times are hard.

Thats what i mean about having the balls. Save enough cash for 6 months mortgage and use your skills.

Set up a simple online shop selling stuff at a small profit, expand your range, sell more, buy cheaper, 4 year plan to have someone else run it all while you live on the cream..

Be a middleman for a popular service.

Find a niche in your current trade and fill the gap?

Two kinds of men in this world, those who buy a lottery ticket and dream or those who keep the pound and earn 2 more with it.

Yep  Col (as you know) I have worked at my present job for 22 years now :shock: (admin/accounts/sales/general office stuff) and 3 years ago I trained to become a driving instructor - I did the training with an independent instructor over the period of about 18 months (because of the cost) and even went as far as teaching (on a trainee licence) - had my own dual controlled car (which was amusing  ) and my own web address etc .... I had about 6 customers as I was gonna run the driving school alongside my current job for a period while I built up the business .... however .... I did NOT enjoy the teaching and so I didn't carry it any further :? ... yes, it cost me shitloads of money but I just didn't enjoy the teaching part (I enjoyed the actual driving).

.

So ... I have stayed where I am and it has given me a different perspective at work and I actually enjoy it more and don't get so stressed, however, I am only here because of the money I earn ... If I won or inherited enough money to halve my mortgage then I would leave tomorrow and do another job for less money that I really want to do, but, that aint happened yet and so here I stay

.

On another note ... my eldest son is about to leave college after a year's course and we can't get him a job anywhere  so it has made me realise there really are very few jobs out there :sad::sad:

I'm a wood butcher and I still love what I do. Sometimes though I wish I didn't have to ;) Sometimes I do wonder why I do it. I've worked all this time and I have nothing to show for it

If I could I'd go into OSF repairs and modification, but that would take the one thing I don't have, MONEY! I do kick myself for not doing something years ago. I din't say it's too late for me at 46 but it certainly makes things seem harder to achieve.

I'd say you need to look at 3 main things:

1: What are you good at?

2: What would you like to do?

3: Can you afford it ?

Do it Col, you'll never know if you don't ;)

I love the idea of starting my own thing, but at this present time, the wife is still at home looking after the baby so I need a secure steady income until she can start back at work

Meanwhile a few CV's have been sent out so fingers crossed
