Just wondering what peeps think about satin black under the bonnet of a Mk1 escort Gt ?

Got mine waiting for paint but quotes im getting at present is too much in current climate and lack of regular work, so im thinking whether to prep and satin black with rattles cans, so i can get the car running again ?

Not what id wanted to do originally but it beens parked for nearly 2 years now after having all the panel work done

Would be a hell of a lot less maintenance from a Bufty point of view and yes would be a much more cost effective option,

Will there be a new blingy engine in there?

It's already got a proper 2.1 pinto fitted, all lightened & balanced, previous owner spent £1500 on machining and parts, then built it up himself, was a good mate of mine and ive seen and heard it running prior to me buying the car, he fitted a degas with elctrnoic igntion and a massive exhaust system at the same he built it, thing is i have no bills or rolling road to prove so no one would want to give decent money for it ?

If i could have sold the engine and 5 speed box for decent money i'd of got the shell painted properly, i also have a spare 1700 X/flow or Zetec to put in it's place, it's an original 1300gt so i thought the crossflow when suit it well and i know its a quick one cos it came out another mates kit car coupled with a type9 box.

It's catch 22 sell the motor to fund the shell or just diy the shell for time being, ive had it stored and not touched it for 18mths now so it's getting to the point of wanting to do something with it or just sell the lot.

spraying it yourself would be alot cheaper and then hopefully you can get it on the road and maybe in the furture you could afford to have it sorted

also if the pinto is a good one keep it in there

Cheers, yeah it does look better then expected, if honest im not normally a big fan of satin black bays but it may be a good temp thing to get it running again.

It shouldnt be hard to do as ive just fitted new top plates, slam panel and front panel, should look ok with the current colour also ?

If you satin black it with rattle cans it'll be murder in the future to paint it as it'll all have to come of because car paint will react on top of it.

if ur going to put the satin black through a gun u may as well put the right colour through the gun? wouldnt off thought a couple off runs would matter to much as once its all back together you wont see to much paint any way.

Gloss black would look a little more 'finished' perhaps, if you're going down the black route and the gun route?

i rattle can'd the the bay and front of the wings diamond white on snow white (mk2 scort) and came out pretty damn good, took about 8 cans, but it doesn't like petrol when me and jiffer first got the engine running the inlet valve was to tight on pot4 and backwashed the petrol through the 40's and quickly washed the paint off

I quite like stain black, it is low maintenance but as others said you might as well put the right colour through.

Metallic is more difficult but getting quality rattle cans really does help. L.E Went in New Malden do a straight-from-the-can gloss paint that I've used and it works well. I've also used halfords paints and got a reasonable finish.

For metallic take your time, don't press the button then move the can. Have the can already moving across when you press the button and you will get a uniform coat. This is one of my spruce up jobs done outside with rattle cans:

I forgot to say, when I finally get around to getting in professionally done it does not hand to be sanded or stripped all the way. An isolator coat will stop any paint reaction and this can also be bought in the can.
