shaun1.6ghia Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 What is the width of a escort English axle and the width of a Capri axle please guys
LUKE261 Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 Why dont u ask rhatd the best english axle for mk2 consul lol
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 16, 2012 Author Report Posted December 16, 2012 Hey Luke, started it in projects an restos mate Who's that? He got a consul? Just trying to work out sizes, might be a while before I get to putting one on or when I've saved up for one. Dunno wether to run English or atlas :-/
welshmike Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 IIRC escort axles are 48.5" wide, mk1 capri is 50" and mk2/3 capris are 52"
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 16, 2012 Author Report Posted December 16, 2012 Thank you welshmike, what par is that measured from? Is it the face of the wheel hub or the back of the drum? Thanks shaun
welshmike Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 thats tha width of the axle casing im pretty sure. so add probably about 5"? for overall width. hope that helps
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 17, 2012 Author Report Posted December 17, 2012 Awesome, if that's true I need a escort sized axle would love to have the 3.09 diff the atlas runs
rallyesport04 Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 stick a mk1 capri axle under it its only 1" extra a side and has a 3.09 diff use a differant offset to push the wheel back in
Admin Vista Posted December 18, 2012 Admin Report Posted December 18, 2012 What engine, box and tyre size are you intending to use with your axle? 3.09 is a very tall ratio that gives long legs on a motorway run but is better suited to big capacity engines with lots of torque.
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 18, 2012 Author Report Posted December 18, 2012 Hi rallysport04 long timeno see mate, what is it classic ford? How you mate? Are the 3.09 Capri axles a fortune or quite available? I'm after a long ratio vista, for motorway driving an ill have enough torque matey I run a 3.54 in my escort with type9 5speed an 175.50.13 tyres but that'll be way too revvy for what I'm after. If I can't get hold of one ill have to run a 3.54 but unsure this will be low enough for me. Is a mk1 Capri axle a English or atlas? Thanks guys
welshmike Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 Mk1 Capris had English and Atlas, think it was onls the V6s that had the Atlas? Mines a 1600 and its deffo a 50" English. Mk1 capri Atlas is pretty rare though and therefore expensive. Does plenty of torque mean V8?
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 18, 2012 Author Report Posted December 18, 2012 Hi welshmike, what diff you running? Yeah they are a short atlas so well wanted for escorts :-/ No not v8, I'm keeping that part of my project under my hat ATM. everyone will see when it's done lol
welshmike Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 To be hones t mate I cant remember! whatever is standard for a 1.6 capri! 3.77:1 maybe? speedo shows 60 at about 3500rpm if that helps?
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 18, 2012 Author Report Posted December 18, 2012 Hi welshmike yeah with 13" wheels that sounds about right. Want less revs. Gonna look for the final drive calculator on here an work out what to do :-/
welshmike Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 Ive got 15s with 195/45/15s, probably similar rolling radius as standard. but tyre size doesnt affect what the speedo shows, mine reads about 10% fast.
Admin Vista Posted December 18, 2012 Admin Report Posted December 18, 2012 Tyre size absolutely does affect your speedo reading, it also affects your gearing. It's the 175/50's that are are causing your revs problem (i.e. too revy at high speed) get shot of them and it will disappear.
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 18, 2012 Author Report Posted December 18, 2012 Hi vista, I'm happy with the 175.50.13's on my escort. This is for my project that will have to have bigger tyres an wheels I think to get my revs down.
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 18, 2012 Author Report Posted December 18, 2012 P.s. tyre size affects how accurate your speedo reading is compared to how fast your actually going.
welshmike Posted December 19, 2012 Report Posted December 19, 2012 yeah i reolise that, should of worded it differently.. what i ment was at a particular rpm in a particular gear your speedo will read the same regardless of tyre size. just to clear it up
rallyesport04 Posted December 23, 2012 Report Posted December 23, 2012 Hi rallysport04 long timeno see mate, what is it classic ford? How you mate? You about this year? Yeah I got a garage now an love being indoors
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 28, 2012 Author Report Posted December 28, 2012 What's the difference in koln axles? What diffs do they have, they are rear loading so are they ineterchangeable with anything else to achieve a ratio around 3.0-3.5? How strong are they?
Admin Vista Posted December 28, 2012 Admin Report Posted December 28, 2012 I can only answer your last question. They're not strong at all, in fact a reputable axle builder describes them as weaker than a standard English axle.
shaun1.6ghia Posted December 29, 2012 Author Report Posted December 29, 2012 Thank you vista, I had heard that before. Just making sure as I had got offered one real cheap. Gonna go for a trusty English axle I think ykt
