Streetfighter Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 Is it possible to fit rear discs, with a brolly handbrake onto an english axle (MK1 Cortina) without pulling and machining the half shafts? It seems alot of effort for not a massive gain and means the car has to be off the road again
katana Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 I believe that most of the discs available that are suitable for 13" rims don't have enough clearance for the 1/2 shaft flanges! Discs suitable for 15" rims may have greater diameter so accommodating the flange. Luckily I got a lathe in the shed!
Streetfighter Posted January 5, 2013 Author Report Posted January 5, 2013 205? What calipers etc would have to be used?
rallyesport04 Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 dont need to pull the shafts if you dont want too ive heard of people just running a grinder round them only need about a 1mm of them personaly i would remove them tho an stick them in the lathe an do it properly i thought 51erra rear calipers fitted over 13" rims

But mine needed a little kiss with the grinder to clear the inside rims of the RS 4 spokes on my install
Streetfighter Posted January 6, 2013 Author Report Posted January 6, 2013 So what's the exact set up that works well and doesn't need halfshaft machining?
rallyesport04 Posted January 6, 2013 Report Posted January 6, 2013 none as far as im aware of it aint a big job to pull the shafts 4 bolts out the back plate and a slide hammer the shafts out do one side at a time you wont lose any oil if they dont come out you havent lost anything buy trying just put the drum bolts back in katana my friend was running superlites an went straight over 13x7 using 51ierra calipers rs 4 spokes have a very thick inner rim could be why they hit
Escort Mk1 4 Door Posted January 6, 2013 Report Posted January 6, 2013 slide hammer lol i wish one of mine took about 50 odd hits with a 14lb sledge hammer, after i bolted the drum on backwards and knackered it
livewire7116 Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 i used to have an old std steel wheel put on backwards at back of garage until i made a puller from an old halfshaft
rallyesport04 Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 slide hammer lol i wish one of mine took about 50 odd hits with a 14lb sledge hammer, after i bolted the drum on backwards and knackered it sod that if its that tight get the bottles out an give it some heat they will fly out
Streetfighter Posted January 8, 2013 Author Report Posted January 8, 2013 I've had the shafts out before.. And they'll need to come out slightly when I fit an LSD in the housing. It's just the whole taking them somewhere to be done etc. Its my daily driver so all the stuff I do has to be done in a day. (Except the CA18DET that now sits between the wings)

Streetfighter Posted January 8, 2013 Author Report Posted January 8, 2013 That makes a lot of sense.. And it can be done anytime..
Toby Posted January 14, 2013 Report Posted January 14, 2013 Puddy's idea is a clever bit of lateral thinking, but I'd still do the shafts for 2 reasons. One, you're not waekening the disc, and two you only have to do it once, not every time you need replacement discs. Where are you based? It will only take an hour, tops, to do the shafts. I'd do them while you waited if you're local to gatwick. Toby
Streetfighter Posted January 14, 2013 Author Report Posted January 14, 2013 Down in Portsmouth.. I may go 9" drums on the rear or just leave them. They are ample enough but the brolly brake is a tad rubbish..

Chances of some one wearing out a set of rear discs on an osf are pretty slim as well ,lol. puddy
Escort Mk1 4 Door Posted January 15, 2013 Report Posted January 15, 2013 bias pedal box hydrolic handbrake this is why we convert the mk1 to 9 inch mk2 stuff

Ok mate - the offer is there. I have the set up you're talking about on mine, with the brolly, and it's never going to do handbrake turns!! Brakes are good though!
Streetfighter Posted January 16, 2013 Author Report Posted January 16, 2013 Definitely about the clutch and throttle to get the poor old girl rotating.. Just about holds on a hill now though. Win Haha

More chance of breaking a half shaft than there is wearing out the rear discs puddy
