mr g...can you build me a 160 bhp engine with 140 odd ft/lbs for £50?

and an endless supply of said engines for £50 each? ford can;-)

you could buy a 100 horse running on 3 pinto for £50 why would anyone want a 160 horse 4 cylinder zetec for

I must have spent £300/400 maybe more on my crossflow engine to get it rebuilt back to what I would call a standard or maybe? fast road spec, Hardened valve seats, head skim, cam, followers, shells, higher compression pistons, a decent electronic distributor, side draught carbs, etc, etc,

none of this properly tunable by myself, and maybe producing 100hp if I was lucky.

Zetec cost next to nothing. Has never had the head or sump off.

And for the £300/400 I get fully mappable fueling and ignition. And you tell me? what hp?

Pound for pound I know which is more fun, easiest to find, and cheapest.

Oh and to the "keeping it all period guys" well good luck with the 20/50 oil and crossplys

20/50 oil is easy enough to get and the Valvoline VR1 is certainly good stuff  .

Admittedly I don't fancy the cross plys much but radials were readily available when most OSF's were new anyway so I don't see your point :?

I was generally making the point that if we were going to keep it all strictly to "period" mods, then maybe we would be using everything to a 50s 60s or 70s spec?

Perhaps the oil and tyres were poor examples, how about Tig/ mig welding and CNC machining? Certainly not available to the general ford enthusiast in old skool times.

We wouldn't be able to use modern products, techniques, materials etc and above all we wouldn't have seen anything new for years.

Dunno what the problem is - if your a purist, fine keep it nice and stock but people have been swopping motors between different models since cars became mass market!

There's been plenty of Rover V8's gone into Escorts, MGB's with Stag (crap) and Rover V8's, Mini's with Metro Turbo's, Cortina's with V6's etc etc etc..

I would like to think if the Escort was still in production the Zetec or a Duratec would have been engines Ford would have fitted?

if people dont like them then thats there opinion but i think they are great,i run a zetec and rev the the round ones out of it,if it goes bang put another one in simples, keep them serviced like any other engine and will keep going, thats my pennies worth :P
