72mk1escort Posted April 23, 2013 Report Posted April 23, 2013 Hi guys, I need a new clutch kit for my 1974 mk1 transit campervan i brought a brand new old stock transit mk1 v4 clutch kit from ebay and it all is the same (release bearing and friction plate) apart from the pressure plate which is slightly smaller around the outside edge (not the bit the clutch plate sits on thats the same diameter) and the dowls/bolt spacing is different and the holes dont line up with my flywheel it is a very small difference but its enough to stop me fitting it. Mine is definitely the smaller size clutch 8 1/2" or 215mm.The local parts shop my dad uses as his in the motor trade have even ordered in a corsair v4 clutch kit and a pinto clutch kit and they both have the same difference on the pressure plate. No one seems to be able to tell me what clutch kit I need and mine is a UK built 1974 registered late 1973 build date 1.7 v4 enginged canterbury mk1 transit short wheel base transit 90 campervan. I was just hoping that someone on here might have come up against this problem and knows what clutch i need as im very confused by it now. I know fords were on stike around that time so maybe they fitted a different flywheel/clutch set up i really dont know? ? Any help would be much appreciated.Cheers
72mk1escort Posted April 29, 2013 Author Report Posted April 29, 2013 Nope its turnt out to use a 1.7 morris marina clutch as ford were stiking then and they used those instead just my luck lol
Admin Vista Posted April 30, 2013 Admin Report Posted April 30, 2013 How bizarre, how did you establish that?
72mk1escort Posted April 30, 2013 Author Report Posted April 30, 2013 When my Dad had his m reg 1974 mk1 escort mexico back in the 80s it had triumph 2000 rear brakes on it. That was because ford were striking and they used triumph rear brake parts. My camper was built late 1973 and my dads mexico was the same. He was told that by a guy who was well into the ford scene at the time. And he fitted new drums and shoes to his mexico that were to fit a triumph 2000 .My clutch had to be matched up from my camper and the pressure plate and centre plate that matched my originals are to fit morris marina 1.7 triumph 2000 triuph 2500, 2500 pi etc I tried loads of ford clutch none lined up all of the pressure plates were the wrong spacing/diameter. I tried pinto, v4 corsair, v4 transit, essex v6, crossflow. So fords must have fitted the triumph/marina clutch when they were striking. Interestingly the guy said the clutch thats listed for marina 1.7,s and triumph 2000s etc said on listing also fits some ford transits/ corsair/ capri Very odd but i guess they just used the next closest thing. Im just glad i managed to work out what clutch fits it took 2 weeks for the parts shop to find the right one. Hard to believe but fords got the next closest thing i guess when they were short on parts due to stikes etc. 1
