mexicansteve Posted June 16, 2013 Report Posted June 16, 2013 Anyone been to the Haynes museum in Somerset recently? Any good?
Admin Vista Posted June 16, 2013 Admin Report Posted June 16, 2013 Yes, I've been a few times. There's a lot packed into a small area and some fantastic cars on display. Is it worth it? If you're passing or have reason to be in the area anyway then yes definitely..........but I wouldn't travel from much more than 90 minutes away if that's your only reason for going.

mk2 mike Posted June 16, 2013 Report Posted June 16, 2013 Not been there for a few years, my mate's girlfriend works as one of the mechanics (she gets to blast the cars round their track) and my old Golf GTi is on display there. Deffo worthy of a visit if you're nearby!
XjamesX Posted June 17, 2013 Report Posted June 17, 2013 my old Golf GTi is on display Explain / elaborate?
mk2 mike Posted June 17, 2013 Report Posted June 17, 2013 Not much of a story really, my mate was writing a manual for Haynes and ended up dating a girl (Emma) who was doing her apprenticeship with the Haynes museum (They have on site mechanics to service the cars and run them on their track to keep them ticking over). Around the same time I'd bought a GTi with a blown 1600 engine (Conrod had gone through the block) which I'd replaced with a second hand £60 1800 lump but it was a pretty ropey engine so I was looking to offload it when I found a replacement car. Through my mate I got to become good friends with Emma. Every year Haynes puts on a staff Xmas party and I got invited along through Emma, as her sister was single and I was being lined up for the role of boyfriend. (Cilla Black eat your heart out) At the party I was introduced to John Haynes and we got talking about cars, and I mentioned to him that I had this GTi I was looking to shift. He mentioned he wanted a mk1 GTi for his museum as it was such an iconic car so he bought it from me and stuck it on display, where it still sits today (still with the incorrect campaign model Pirelli alloys and dodgy Alpine stereo lol). Like I said I've been back a few times to see KHW 431X but it just reminds me if getting nowhere with Emma's sister :0(
