5/6mm steel - how much?

Any ideas how much i should be paying for 5 or 6 mm steel sheet about 500x500mm once i find somewhere that'll sell it ebays being bloody rubbish or sellers aint replying!

 

Should be meaty enough to make some engine mounts out of!

I think an 8' x 4' sheet of 3mm steel sells for about £120. Go to a steel supplier, if you ring them, they'll give you a price over the 'phone...

You'd be better just calling round at a local sheet metal/fab shop and asking one of the lads/foreman, most places would give you a piece, your not after much are you

You can always root around your local scarp yard. We always get that sort of stuff weighed in!

have you tried a truck scrap yard? a piece off a steel tipper body sounds about right.

whatever you do dont go to homebase. a 1000x500mm sheet of 1mm steel is near on 20 quid there

I'd say that 6mm would be plenty thick enough for engine mounts.

 

Go to a local metal fabrication place though Anywhere that does steel work, building trade, roller shutters, etc. If you came into where I work you'd get an offcut of sheet metal what you're after for the cost of a 6 pack of beer

same with our place, i would cut the profiles for you on one of our plasma machines to for some beer money

we got loads of off cuts at work. As they've said go round local steel fabrication or profiling places and they'll sort you out, probably get it for nowt
