mk_one_estate Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 hello people, i'm planning on putting my 1600 X-flow & type 9 box in my estate next weekend, just wondered if there was anything i need to be aware of when doing it, do i need a different clutch cable? cheers guys Marcus.
oxb1l Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Get a bit of plate for your clutch cable to pull against When the rs cable is fitted it goes through a hole in the sump that you wont have And an early sierra or sure its a sunbeam clutch plate (type 9 spline and xflow diameter) An rs or auto prop Bill
mk2 mike Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 I'm doing the same to mine soon. I've been told you will need- Alloy RS bellhousing (not absolutely necessary, but it gives more clearance in the tunnel. A big Hammer will achieve the same ) around £150 If you have the alloy bellhousing you'll need the proper RS clutch fork. Around £40 A 23 spline clutch plate (I've been told a 1600 sierra one will suit) As said, a bracket for the clutch cable to pull on. You can make your own or retroford do these ones for £8 Alloy gearbox lowering blocks to lower the box and use the original mounting holes. (Or you can drill new holes and just bolt it through the floor, depending if you want to drill into the shell) around £20 Single piece prop shaft. Around £150 You can get a longer speedo cable as the box is longer but its not necessary. You'll need to move the gearstick hole back a bit (again as the box is longer than a 4 speed) you can see from this pic where someone has cut out the hole, turned it round and put it back in. And finally a quick shift gear lever. The longer box means the gearstick will foul the handbrake. (Or you could bend the original gearstick). Around £50 Have a search on the t'interweb. There's loads of 'how to' guides. Good luck!
mk_one_estate Posted August 7, 2013 Author Report Posted August 7, 2013 thanks for the detailed reply mate, thats a big help, as i want the engine in asap i might stick with the 4 speed box for now, cheers Marcus.
mk2 mike Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 No probs mate. I've been slowly collecting the bits over a period of time and apart from the prop and clutch I've got it all. Just hope my gearbox is a 2.8 one and not a diesel type! Doh!
mk_one_estate Posted August 8, 2013 Author Report Posted August 8, 2013 yeah i'm gonna do the same i reckon, still, the 1600 with a 4 speed will be a massive difference to the dodgy running 1100 thats in it at the mo haha cant wait cheers M.
oxb1l Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 I took the quick shift out of mine as I had a rose jointed one and all it done was rattle Works fine with the std one
mk2 mike Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 I took the quick shift out of mine as I had a rose jointed one and all it done was rattle ) I've heard this. In fact the company that supplied mine said it too. They said if I pack it with grease it'll be silent. :/
theloudboy Posted August 9, 2013 Report Posted August 9, 2013 I've heard this. In fact the company that supplied mine said it too. They said if I pack it with grease it'll be silent. :/ Mike mine makes so much noise its unreal mate, don't know whats worse the gearset or quick shift lol
quickrack Posted August 9, 2013 Report Posted August 9, 2013 I am about to do exactly this as well. But I bought alloy blocks from GS Escxorts that mean I can bolt the gearbox crossmember to the original holes and not drill new ones. And I am using a 2 piece prop because they are smoother.
disco66 Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Same as Mike & Quickrack, I have finally sourced all my bits, now just some spare cash to get the boys at Ashtons to install. 1
katana Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 And I am using a 2 piece prop because they are smoother. Smoother as in its got twice as many joints to wear and introduce slop into the driveline? The quickest way from point A to Point B is a straight line QED.....one piece prop! 1
Andrade Posted October 18, 2013 Report Posted October 18, 2013 Do you guys put the type 9 in together with the engine, or first engine, then box? I'll be tacking this tomorrow and trying to do it the best way so as not to damage the paint as much as possible.
