First off, apologies if I should have posted this up in the Cortina section, but I figured it's not particularly specific and it may get a few more views here.

My Cortina's master cylinder had finally given up the ghost. I have noticed a deterioration in my brakes' performance over the last couple of days and on inspection I've noticed that there is fluid seeping from the join between the servo/master cylinder. It did this around march this year so I had the master rebuilt with new seals etc. however this happening again would suggest it had past its best.

The problem is, there are very few off the shelf replacements for the mk 3, the best compromise seems to be a land rover item but that has UNF outlets rather then M10. I have ordered one in, and it comes with unions but I'll need new pipes made up. I have also ordered a Hel brake line kit to fit at the same time.

Now, I think the best option would be to get new copper pipes made with the metric fittings at the calliper ends and the UNF fittings for the master cylinder. Would this be something a decent local indie garage would be willing to do or is it easy/cheap enough to do myself, bearing in mind that I have no tools for bending/flaring pipes or pipe cutters as it's not something I have ever needed to do? I know there's a few Crawley folk here so any suggestions would be appreciated.

My last question is is the servo likely to be OK or will it need a service? The car is my daily but I'm sure I could source another mk 3 servo to get refreshed to minimise time off the road.

Cheers in advance!

Making up brake pipes isn't a challenging job but if you don't have any of the necessary tools to do it, it's probably cheaper just to get a local garage to make them up for you and yes, they should be able to do it for you no problem.

I got me a really decent hand flaring tool and made up or re-made all my lines as the new pedal box masters used UNF whilst everything else was metric.

If you get the copper and the lengths you want, you could pop over any weekend and i'll make them up for you? Most copper is annealed so is hand formable

for bending - just don't go too tight on the radius. If its just the fitting to change, then the original flare can be cut off and re-made - you'll lose about 1/4" of

overall length. I'm in Camberley BTW.

Thanks for the replies, and thanks for the offer Katana, unfortunately although camberley is a little too far at the moment as the car is basically undrivable. I have a couple of decent local independents who I would be happy to chuck a few beer tokens at to build the pipes so I'll give that a go when I have the parts. I may finally then have a cortina that stops as well as it goes!

its finding the correct unions thats always the problem, unless you can find a good dealer.

What ive done is to reuse the unions but you have to make sure they are in good nick first.

Kits are available on ebay as well as other sites, get yourself a good one though as some of the cheaper ones are pants
