has anyone worked on or fitted a lotus 2.2 engine (I think its called a 912 engine) in a mk1 escort?? I have seen it done twice before so know it can be done I just wanted another opinion

1 is it worth doing?

2 what sort of power?

3 how hard is it to fit? and cost as I don't have a shed load of money to put into it!

4 should I do it or sell it and put the money into a pinto?

I really don't know I have had a shell sitting in my unit for 4 years doing nothing and was given the engine and box for free so think it would be nice to fit it if poss and I would be different as you don't see it done very often! what do you think????

ooooooooo and pics if possible

Is that the engine fitted in the Sunbeam lotus? If so then yes, there's a mk1 escort on here that has one (or maybe had one as I think it was going to be taken out again) in it

I'm sure I've seen one or two in classic ford mag over the years. I doubt they are that powerful so certainly wouldn't go out of my way to buy one but if you was given it for free it might make for an interesting and cost effective conversion.

This is the car, I bought it from dal but had problems with the engine so i sold it on to Nick at playmini, he's now rebuilding the engine to 250bhp spec, it was 174bhp at the rear wheels previously and went well, the car seamed well balanced with this engine in but i personally arent a big fan of chopping the bulkhead up. It was a good conversion but i think it would be much simpler to just use a pinto or zetec which can produce the same sort of power easy enough. If you check out the playmini.com page on Retards Club there are loads of pics of this car being rebuilt and Nick is doing a fantastic job of it, it's gonna be stunning once finished!

Problem with the lotus 900 engines is that they cost a fortune to rebuild & tune!

There are easier fitting more modern engines out there that will produce similar power

If you do decide to go for it, the last model built with these (from memory) were the Excels, these were also mated to the better W58 Toyota gearbox
