mk2 matt Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 what do you people use to treat surface rust ? and does it work ? I'm not talking cut it out or blast it, its not that bad, Its a case of sand it down then treat it with something that works but what? Ian
over_head_cam Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 If it's only surface you should be able to sand/grind it away and then paint as normal. Anything deeper can be treated with any of the commercial rust treatments (Jenolite, Halfords own, Krust etc) But is likely to return sooner than you'd like.
The Transplanter Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 if its a small area, then you want "Bilthamber Deox Gel" It removes all oxide and leaves a pitted metal finish, its water based and is the best product you will find. If you can remove parts then there is also a powdered form that you mix with water to use as a bath I do a lot of restoration work and dont use anything else now http://www.bilthamber.com/corrosion-treatments/deox-gel
iandq Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 whatever you use ( i use liquid genolite 5ltrs about 60quid or so ) just make sure that you end up with clean grey metal, then degrease properly and use an etch primer and you should be good for ever. avoid products that encapsulate or cover the rust, they never work. i've heard good things about bilt hamber, but never used it. cheers, ian.
mk2 matt Posted November 28, 2013 Author Report Posted November 28, 2013 thanks for the info have used the powdered stuff before and it was very good so will give it a go ian
4-Door Pete Posted November 29, 2013 Report Posted November 29, 2013 I use to use Ku-rust which is ok but now I use… Vinegar! I kid you not, the sort you put on your chips. Put the parts in a tub cover with vinegar and leave for a few days and low and behold out comes a rust free bit of metal. Etch-prime it and you've saved a fortune on rust remedies. I have also use molasses but vinegar is easier to get hold of.
