fuelling problem?

noticed that when I boot the capri it doesn't pick up as quick as expected and if I boot it hard it backfires. Think that there is a problem with fuel getting through to the engine. My thoughts are;

• second choke is sticking  (DGAV fitted)
• there is an accelerator pump on the side of the carb that gives a quick squirt of fuel when you boot it- is that working properly?
• the float is not adjusted right so there is insufficient fuel in the carb when I boot it 
• the fuel pump ain't operating at full tilt

Also noticed that when I start it up after a couple of days in the garage the engine falters for a few seconds before picking up.  Any advice really appreciated

How old is your fuel? loads of people are havuing probs this year with cars that have been layed up for a few months over the winter as the fuel goes off so quickly these days and has symptoms like your seeing.

yep, fuel was last added back in september before I laid the car up. Maybe onto something there as car was running perfect before the lay up.

Unfortunately the 5% ethanol that is now put in the fuel absorbs water that is in the air and then the fuel will go off spec and won't combust properly

will try to use up the remaining 1/2 tank and then fill up with a fresh load. Is it worth filling up now and mixing the old with the new?

Have you checked your timing is correct and are you running points maybe clean up your ignition system could be a dirty distributor cap . My capri will bog down on choke if you floor it.

No, empty the tank as much as possible and start again.

I've had problem with fuel too. I've had detonation and melted plugs. Now I've lower compression on number 3

new fuel added last night, went out this morning but still not revving as freely as it should. Need to have a look at the plugs and points next before I spend any dosh. After that I think the next step is to replace the fuel pump as it something seems to be limiting the power delivery - petrol flow??

Also check or replace the fuel filter

You should have an in line filter somewhere close to the carbs if you haven't then it's a good idea to fit one

wonder if the damm ethanol has partly dissolved the diagphram in the fuel pump which is affecting the pump rate. Strangely met up with a Corsair owner today who has had similar issues though he doesn't push his engine as hard as I sometimes do. He has filled up with fresh petrol and no change either to the performance.
