gwtaylor22 Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 Was there a difference between the 2 as I know the sport came with a slightly different ratio 4 speed to the normal and think it was classes as a gt box?? Was this the same box as the rs2000
Savvi Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 Not as far as I know, the 1600 box is a all in one unit where as the Rs box has a removable bellhousing and came from the Mk3 Cortinas with better ratios.
wayne cossie Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 rs box gear stick comes out further back as well, same ratios as a type 9 i think
Admin Vista Posted April 21, 2014 Admin Report Posted April 21, 2014 The 1600 Sport has a Type 2 box (as said above, with integral bell housing) and I don't believe the ratios were any different to the other non RS model escorts in the range. The RS2000 (mk1 & 2) and the Mk2 Mexico have a type E box (also as said above, the first four ratios are the same between the Type E and Type 9)
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted April 22, 2014 Moderator Report Posted April 22, 2014 I would put my money that it has a Type E box the same as the RS2000. As I mentioned in other threads the South African and Australian cars share a fair amount of parallel development. In order to streamline manufacture for Mk2s they tried to standardise alot of parts throughout the range. All shells had the gearshift in the same place and the type E gearbox was basically fitted to all later Escorts including 1300s and 1600s. (when we would break a gearbox in our 2lt cars we would try to get the Type Es out of a smaller engined Escort with the theory it had had an easier life) I am pretty sure your 1600 probably had that from the factory too and given it now has a 2lt in it, makes me even more certain it does now. Mind you stranger modifications have been made over the years but my guess its a Type E
