He works for VW and keeps telling me to buy one. Says the guy looking for a Capri. Rubbish. Skodas and seats are EXACTLY the same under the skin as current VWs. Same engines, suspension, brakes, transmission etc etc. Same good points, same bad. For example the new Octavia VRS is a Golf Mk5 GTI, but for a couple of grand less. The Leon Cupra R is a Golf GTI with an Audi S3 engine! They just have different body work and trim and even have better equipment levels! Trust me I work of VW, and if I was spending my own cash on one I would never buy a VW over a Skoda or Seat!

When I worked in the parts dept for a local SEAT dealer, I found them diabolical to get parts out of. If we were desperate for bits then I would get in touch with VW. If I wanted panels then I had to order 3 of the same on the off chance I was gonna get a half decent one. My brother worked for SEAT then too I think that's where his attitude comes from. I wouldn't buy a new car now. Was considering the new Focus or possibly Mazda 3 but decided to spend the money on OSF's instead.

I was thinking about the Golf GT TDi but heard that it's a bit crap, just as well go for the GTi....... Nah I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a Mk1 Escort again. Won't roll it this time tho.

The TDIs are a great engine but the petrols are very average and poor compared to the new Ford lumps and the Japs. Unfortently the current VWs are not as reliable as they were 15 years ago. The Mk4 Golf has really bad reliability, the mk5 seems to be better but still not great. Did you know that VW in the USA has almost gone bust, mainly because of VWs poor reputation for reliability? For some reason the european market hasnt picked up on this yet. When I worked at a Nissan dealership, we normally replaced an engine once every 6 months or so and never a gearbox. We normally do 3 or 4 engines & 2 or 3 gearboxes every month at VW! Basically if you dont want any trouble then forget european cars and buy Japanese!

We have just sold a clutch and dual mass flywheel for one of them GTTDI things and it cost US about 350 + vat to BUY IN And that wasnt including the concentric slave cylinder
sab6024 Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Won't be going for the VW then. Not sure about the Mazda 3 tho. Not a bad looking car on the Focus floorpan but cost of servicing is quite high. At least with the VW you get the chance to have a Long Life service if you do more than average mileage. I haven't come across this anywhere else. I do about 30000 miles a year for work so I don't want the car in the garage every couple months.
