So my mk2 van has been running rough for a while. Starts great and drives fine but the revs go up and down slightly on idle. I fitted a new inlet manifold gasket and sealed the joints. It runs abit better but when you stop at lights after a couple of seconds the revs rise quite abit. Move off and its fine. Stop again and a few seconds later the revs rise.

Ive sprayed wd40 around the carb and manifold but doesnt make any difference.

Ive noticed that 1 of the exhaust manifold studs have snapped could that effect it?

The only other thing could be a vacume leak. Ive got a small pipe fron the distributer th the carb. Then a blank blocking off an inlet on the inlet manifold. Does this sound right?

Thanks sorry for the long post its driving me mad lol

Are the coolant hoses blocked, so the carb thinks the engine's cold? I've got the same engine and found my coolant system is up the duff...pipes feel like they crack when you squeeze them. New rad and hoses on order for me..

This can happen when the heaters havent ever been flushed out properly so would try some Nulon Radiator flush but when you flush through with clean water jam the water hose right into the heater inlet to clear that out as well as the water inlet to the inlet manifol.

That said your in Australia so I would look at either a dirt build up in the carburettor that blocking the jets every now and again (also the auto choke just having a wobbly is often on the cards so if you doing a carby clean do the choke at the same time get the full kit not the half one) Dust build up in the carbies is a very Australian pehnomenon with the drier weather and dust in the air in general. Also virtually the only gasket kit supplier in Australia (Fuel Miser) cut the little internal fuel filter out of the kit to save costs when in fact in Australia is most where this little filter is needed. Better still fit an external inline one if you can. Also if you suspect an inlet manifole leak is probably through one of the Australian spec emission control tubes. The deceleration valve that is bolted to the inlet manifold on Australian Pinto engines are nutorious for failing and letting in air and most bypass them altogether. Also a jammed and worn PCV valve (Positive crankcase ventilation) sometimes does cause the effect you describe poor idling etc. Fuel Miser make replacement valves for Pinto engines too and its sometimes hard to spot the valve itself buried in the oil seperater as its usally totaly covered with oil and grime. If you get the carb kit you may as well get a new PCV valve at the same time since they come from the same company. Lastly have consider the Vaccuum advance on the distibutor may be leaking or sticking and thats giving you an uneven advance?

Wow thanks guys alot for me to look at there. Fingers crossed i can sort it.

Is there an easy way to disconect the choke so i see if it makes a difference when driving?

You can remove most of the auto choke mechanism by undoing the three screws that hold down the retaining ring that in turn hold the auto choke housing onto the carburettor. The trouble is they may boe be all accesible with the carby bolted to the manifold. Once off however you just join the two heater hoses (The in and out of the auto choke) with a straigh tube piece you can get from any fluid connectors. If it still does it with all that off then you would know if its something else. Where in Sydney are you at the moment?

Where abouts? Ive taken the auto choke off and cleaned the radiator and heater out. Still same seems to be worst when hot. The van its in is going to be stripped for parts. My yellow van has a 1.6 auto in it. Runs well so not sure if i should try tuning that anf fit the manual 5 speed box off the 2.0 engine

Im at Prospect during the day. I wouldnt scrap it if its a genuine 2lt Van. Its worth more as a whole that for parts. Unless the body is so far gone. If its still occuring with the choke off then its the crank case venting or emmision control pumps letting air in.
