wazzzuk Posted September 29, 2014 Report Posted September 29, 2014 Anybody on here import cars from abroad or can help with advice on how you go about doing it and then registering the cars in the uk,seems the cars are quite cheap to buy but the price goes really high when they come into the uk............wondered if its worth doing it yourself ?
The Transplanter Posted September 29, 2014 Report Posted September 29, 2014 Theres not a simple answer, as buying outside the EU is different to buying within, and import taxes depend on the age etc. Also registration varies depending on origin & age! What is it your thinking of importing?
wazzzuk Posted September 30, 2014 Author Report Posted September 30, 2014 was looking at old American pickups but not a clue how you go about shipping then registering them over here
SmokeEm Posted September 30, 2014 Report Posted September 30, 2014 Speak to Jimmy on Rods n Sods. That's what he does every month. 1
katana Posted September 30, 2014 Report Posted September 30, 2014 Google is your friend....... https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/overview http://www.import-car.info/shipping.shtml 1
The Transplanter Posted September 30, 2014 Report Posted September 30, 2014 was looking at old American pickups but not a clue how you go about shipping then registering them over here Your biggest problem is buying the right vehicle, there is some real shit over there that you could fall into the trap of buying. You need a good contact stateside to be able to look at vehicles for you, you might be better off paying a premium by buying something already in the UK because if its a dog you can walk away! But saying that, it is an exciting experience as I have bought bikes in, in the past and a good friend of mine has been bringing in cars since the 60's! He is 76 now and still finding some gems out there. Rods and sods is a good place to start researching, some people though are reluctant to help though, as its slim pickings out there now and you are just another poacher as far as they are concerned 1
GJUK Posted September 30, 2014 Report Posted September 30, 2014 It's not cheap to do it properly. You can us roro which is cheaper than a container but shipping will be £1200+ That's just the container ship, you have to get your car to the port also etc etc Only worth it on 5kgbp + cars. 1
wazzzuk Posted September 30, 2014 Author Report Posted September 30, 2014 I've spoken to him already mate cheers
pnwrs2000 Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 Not the same really but I've got an escort that was imported from Polland. Long story short it was straight forward until it got to the UK. I bought it from a UK seller who didn't let HMRC know that the car is now in the UK and also hadn't registered it with DVLA. I tried to register it with DVLA (which cost £55 fee plus 6 months RFL) but it nearly went tits up when I found out about the HMRC NOVA scheme that the car hasn't been registered with. HMRC then tried to charge me £5 per day late notification fee which totalled a rather sizeable £900 !!! Anyway, I proved that I wasn't liable for the penalty and they quashed the fine. So in a nutshell I think the UK side of things is pretty straightforward but I'd stress that you need to do your homework to make sure that you're not going to get shafted later down the line 1
